Set in Central Africa. Rose, an English missionary and spinster is forced to leave her mission after German troops burn down the village. Left with no choice, Rose joins scruffy drunk Charlie Alnutt on his trampy old river steamer to head down river to civilisation. Along the hazardous course, Rose drawn by her patriotic duty leads the way in a plan to do their part for the war.
