Education and in particular the Safe Schools program are the chief concerns for constituents, Mature Australia ACT candidate Anthony Hanson says.

The first-time candidate, and business manager, says parents had told him they felt they deserved the right to be consulted about the program before it was implemented.

Hanson said other groups including medical bodies had voiced concerns about the health system, homelessness and housing affordability.

If elected as a senator Hanson in his first year has pledged to "set aside" 50 per cent of his base salary of $199,040 to address the growing problems of homelessness, veterans in crisis and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, even going as far as to sign a statutory declaration which, he says, is not to gain votes but "keep focus" on areas ignored by other politicians.

"We have a serious crisis in Australia in regards to the homeless … we should be addressing that," he said.

"Another concern of mine is that we have personnel working in high-stress positions be it in the medical, armed service or ambulance field and that does take its toll on people, they do suffer from PTSD.

"We should be focusing on assisting those people to the best of our ability to get through that difficult situation so we can get them back into the community."

Among his personal concerns for the election was a desire for Australia to withdraw its involvement from the UN, to redirect the "exorbitant amount of money" to Australian citizens.

"Let's clean up our own backyard first before we start handing out money to everyone else and get our homeless off the streets," he says.

He would also pursue the establishment of a "totally independent corruption body" to monitor government expenditure, if elected after witnessing the waste of "taxpayer dollars" firsthand when he worked as a COMCAR driver.

Hanson says his party's policies were "very much in tune" with the direction of his United Citizens Australia Facebook page.

"They believe in government of the people, by the people, for the people," he says.

"They believe in the members themselves having an actual say on the party's direction … they have the opportunity to contribute to proposed policies before they actually become a policy of the party … you rarely get that in political parties."

Hanson says the party was heavily based on the sovereign rights of voters with policies targeting issues such as discrimination, compassion for immigration, teaching entitlements, health clinics for the ageing, superannuation, public ownership of public assets, freedom of information laws and government spending.

"I spend all my time talking to the community online and the sense I get is they're very unhappy with the major parties … many of them are talking about numbering them last … they're fed up with two-party system and … they're desperate for change."

While Hanson says it would be an unexpected miracle if he was elected, he believes voters this year wanted to see more independents and minor parties in the upper house.
