Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said that from Monday the government would cease funding the services, which he likened to "taxpayer-funded legal advice".

The move, announced during the 2013 election campaign, is expected to save the government $100 million over four years.

The announcement was condemned at the time, with refugee advocates arguing that many asylum seekers did not have the money to pay for professional advice, while the Greens said the move could put asylum seekers in jeopardy if they could not appeal their applications.

Mr Morrison said on Monday that services would still be available, but the government would no longer be paying for them.

"If there are others out there who wish to provide pro bono advice for these sorts of things, we'll facilitate that and we're happy to do that but the taxpayer won't be funding it anymore," he said.

"If people want access to the advice and they want that facilitated that can be done, it's just the taxpayer won't be footing the bill for what is often seen as being legal advice."

Mr Morrison said the government was delivering on a commitment it had been very clear about at the 2013 election.

He said it was not the responsibility of taxpayers to fund asylum seekers pursuing appeals.

The announcement comes days after the government marked 100 days since the last successful asylum boat arrival on Australian shores.

Mr Morrison said government's operation sovereign borders policy was now entering a new phase.

"The first phase was the establishment phase where we saw a more than 80 per cent reduction in arrivals and the second phase where there hasn't been a successful venture," he said.

"Now the third phase in the post monsoon period we will have significant challenges again and we'll be continuing the intensity of our operations in all areas to ensure that success continues."
