Labor defends 'arrogant, cigar-chomping' jibe

Accusing the Treasurer of living a charmed life isn't playing the man, it's all about values says Shadow Assistant Treasurer Andrew Leigh.

The Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten, has lashed Joe Hockey as an “arrogant, cigar-chomping” Treasurer in a fiery speech to about 1000 Labor true believers at the Sydney Town Hall.

And he has vowed Labor will offer “no retreat, no surrender” in its fight to preserve universal health care, arguing that up to $50 billion in cuts to hospitals over the next decade will be “federation changing”.

Speaking at the NSW Labor party conference, Mr Shorten launched a blistering attack on Mr Hockey after returning to Australia from a week in the United States.

And the Opposition Leader urged the NSW ALP to “rebuild as a party of members, not factions" as he called for the ALP to push towards a goal of 100,000 members.

An authorised biography of Mr Hockey released last week revealed the Treasurer thought his budget, which delivered swingeing cuts to health, education and pensions, was too soft but that the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, intervened to stop the budget going even further.

Both the content of the book and its timing has created considerable disquiet in Coalition ranks, with many Liberal MPs unhappy with the Treasurer.

“If this is what an authorised biography reveals imagine what the unauthorised biography would reveal,'' Mr Shorten said.

''This arrogant, cigar-chomping Treasurer, his hopeless story reveals it took Tony Abbott to block him from deeper harder cuts. Seriously, if it's up to Tony Abbott to tell you you've gone too far, you've well and truly gone too far.”

The Treasurer's charmed life, Mr Shorten said, has ‘‘robbed him of charity’’.

The Commission of Audit was a road map, Mr Shorten said, that showed what other cuts the government wanted to make.

“A family which lives on $80,000 per year will be $4000 worse off, and worse off every year. And a family on $65,000 will be over $6000 worse off. 'In Tony Abbott’s Australia, the less you earn – the more you pay,’’ he said.

“Here is the destination the conservative side of politics has set for itself - completely abolishing Family Tax Benefit part B, a $15 GP tax, a hospital tax, a lower state based minimum wage, delaying the National Disability Insurance Scheme.”

A spokeswoman for Mr Hockey said the Treasurer "had more important things to do than respond to a cheap personal attack from Bill Shorten.''

  • Bill obviously hasn’t read Joe’s recent biography, which outlines how his migrant family built up a small delicatessen in Sydney. I wonder if Bill’s ever built anything in his 20 year Labor-union career. What an ignorant and childish statement.

    • Don't pull our collective chains with the old "Dad owned a deli therefore I am the salt of the earth" line Hacka.

      Total BS.

Hockey, Cormann, Pyne. All law graduates who's only "work", apart from a few weeks in a law office somewhere, has been as political operatives.

    • Shorten goes back to the thuggish Union language of the 1950's. Do we want to go back to the 1950's under Shorten? Imagine what Shorten has to say about Swan whose arrogant lies about five budget surplus never came to reality. What did the NSW ALP delegates/members think of Shorten talking about ALP reform when voting for leaders? they could only be thinking 'what is Mr 40% on about'?

    • @Hacka:
Bill has obviously learned his lessons from Tony Abbott and his on going slurs against Julia Gillard during his time as opposition leader. Hopping into Joe Hockey as an arrogant, cigar puffing, rich treasurer is just a powder puff response compared to what our Tony delivered. What you reap is what you sew. As for Joe's immigrant parents, please refer that to Admiral Morrison for further comment.

    • Yes Hacka, his migrant family may have built up a deli but it doesn't hide the fact that Smoking Joe was bought up with a silver spoon in his mouth and that he has no idea how the working class actually live in this country.
Like all of the coalition, Hockey is out of touch with the real Australia

    • hi hacka.

Ignorant and childish statements are all the rage.

They got Hockey and his party into power.

If you are to be fair, you would have to take Shorten's family into account as well - because presumably Hockey's family used profits from the Delicatessen to send him to Sydney University and perhaps a Jesuit college or two.

However, there are two common tropes.

      a. Person with self-made family who punishes those whose achievements have been less than their own, not realising that not all families can or do endow their children with the same abilities or opportunities.

      b. Those who seek to defend the rights of the class to which they have attained - who want to pull up the drawbridge and keep the others out. That is an age of entitlement which the current government loves and nurtures.
