Party officials are already acting on Senator Di Natale's pledge to hunt down and expel those responsible for the damaging leaks that dogged Greens candidate Alex Bhathal throughout her campaign.

In a message to members sent on Monday, and promptly leaked, state co-convenors Rose Read and Colin Jacobs said whoever was behind the sabotage to Bhathal's campaign must be rooted out.

"Such behaviour undermines the work of elected officials

and hundreds of staff and volunteers," the two senior Greens wrote.

"It is an attack on the very mission of the Greens, it can have no place in our party."

The campaign was undermined by a series of internal attacks and leaks against Ms Bhathal by a group of fellow members of the party’s Darebin branch, who were determined that her tilt at Batman, her sixth effort to take the seat, would fail.

In the aftermath of the defeat, Senator Di Natale said the Greens were up against not only a powerful Labor campaign but also enemies within.

“It’s very difficult to run a campaign when you’re not just fighting a machine like that, but you’re also fighting some of your own people,” he told ABC radio on Monday.

“There’ll now be an investigation, the party’s announced that it will do that, and those people found to be responsible for leaking and undermining our candidate need to be expelled.

“I don’t think there’s any other alternative there, I think that’s what needs to happen.

One former West Australian Greens official took the "nuclear option" on Monday, taking to Facebook to denounce Senator Di Natale's 'purge' of dissidents in the party.

Former WA co-convenor Grahame Bowland wrote that the leader had no respect for the party's grassroots structure.

"This is not the first time Richard has called for those who dissent from his personal vision of the party’s future to be forcibly removed from our organisation," Mr Bowland wrote.

"We would have to be fools to think that Richard’s call for a purge is in any long-term sense limited to those allegedly responsible for the alleged leaks in Batman.

"Since Richard’s appointment as federal parliamentary leader, untold cultural damage has been inflicted upon our movement.

"We are now a party which, instead of embracing dissent, fears it, and reflexively acts against it."

Ms Kearney told ABC radio not a single person asked her about the bullying allegations made against her opponent on the campaign trail.

“But what people did raise with me was a general feeling that the tone of politics has lowered somewhat,” she said. “The byelection came on the tails of the events surrounding Barnaby Joyce and people were expressing a dismay about that.”

Ms Kearney said the Greens were not immune to the general dissatisfaction about the state of politics.

However, she said “scaremongering” around the tax reforms announced by Labor during the byelection campaign allowed her explain the policy clearly to voters.

Ms Kearney paid tribute to Ms Bhathal, saying she fought a fair fight.

Greens deputy leader Adam Bandt told ABC radio voters had raised his party’s infighting during the campaign.

He said Ms Bhathal's internal detractors should have dealt with their grievances “in house”.

But Mr Bandt said Labor had run a better resourced campaign that had outspent the Greens.

Local party members will decide whether Ms Bhathal should have another chance to contest Batman, Mr Bandt said.

“We’re a grassroots party and the locals choose who they’re going to run,” he said.
