Political donations from property developers, the minerals industry and tobacco, liquor and gambling companies would be banned under a proposal to be moved by the Greens.

Greens senator Lee Rhiannon will introduce the bill on Thursday. It would forbid parties accepting money or gifts from the five industries, in a bid to "restore public confidence in the work of governments, ministers and individual MPs".
The Greens have long pushed for national reform of donations laws but have faced resistance from the major parties to their calls for a national anti-corruption watchdog.
Senator Rhiannon said on Wednesday that establishing federal legislation to prohibit certain donors was necessary, particularly in the wake of anti-corruption hearings in NSW.
"We've realised that without the consistency of [donations] laws across the country it can be exploited," she said.
"It's been a real challenge to get reform at a federal level, that's why we're starting with something like this.
"How can the parties say no?"
Senator Rhiannon said her bill targeted industries that were perceived as "having inappropriate influence on decision makers".
The Greens monitor donations on their "democracy for sale" website, which ranks the top donors to the major parties as well as the lobbyists with the most client donations.
Senator Rhiannon said the minerals industry had been responsible for more than $5 million in donations and gifts to political parties in the past five years, while the property industry had donated more than $9 million.
"Experience with both Labor and Coalition governments at state and federal levels has shown worrying trends, with some industries picking up windfall gains from ministerial and cabinet decisions," she said.
"This bill deserves support from all sides of politics as it would help restore public confidence in the work of governments, ministers and individual MPs."
