The date was March 23, 2011.
Prime Minister Gillard had announced weeks earlier the federal government would introduce a carbon tax.
Community anger was on the rise. The federal opposition was in revolt, accusing Ms Gillard of having broken a clear pre-election promise and calling for a new election.
On the front lawns of Parliament House, a crowd of 3000 vitriolic anti-carbon tax protesters had gathered, waving placards and signs with offensive slogans such as "ditch the witch" and "Ju-liar... Bob Browns [sic] bitch".
And rather than giving the angry crowd a wide berth, Mr Abbott, former MP Sophie Mirabella and other members of the then-opposition front bench addressed the crowd with those signs as a backdrop.
Five years later, Ms Gillard has told ABC journalist Sarah Ferguson, in part three of her The Killing Season: The Long Shadow documentary, that should have finished Mr Abbott's career.
"I really don't know why this wasn't a career-ending moment for Tony Abbott – sexism is no better than racism," she says.
Former trade minister Craig Emerson says he "felt like vomiting when I saw the signs. 'Ditch the Witch' is bad enough but, 'Ju-liar', 'Bob Browns bitch' is so deeply and utterly offensive."
A day later, an under-pressure Mr Abbott expressed regret and said: "I think a few people went over the top".
On the broken carbon tax promise, Ms Gillard admits to Ferguson that "I understand now looking back on it how foolish it looks", while former treasurer Wayne Swan confesses that Labor lost control of the debate from the moment the carbon tax label stuck.
But the offensive signs were neither the first nor the last time Ms Gillard, Australia's first female prime minister, encountered sexism while occupying the nation's top political job.
The final part of the documentary also examines 2GB broadcaster Alan Jones' infamous suggestion, when Ms Gillard's father died, that "the old man recently died a few weeks ago of shame" - and Ms Gillard's famous "misogyny speech" in which she gave Mr Abbott both barrels.
"The government is not dying of shame. My father did not die of shame," Ms Gillard declared in a speech that reverberated around the world.
"I say to the leader of the opposition I will not be lectured about sexism and misogyny by this man. I will not. I was offended when the leader of the opposition went outside in the front of Parliament and stood next to a sign that said 'ditch the witch". I was offended when the leader of the opposition stood next to a sign that described me as a man's bitch."
Looking back, Ms Gillard tells Ferguson that, "It did shock me that, you know, anyone would want to associate themselves with such a vicious act of cruelty as the one that Alan Jones had engaged in".
Even Kevin Rudd, Ms Gillard's mortal political enemy, says he thought hers was a "brilliant speech".
