Scott Buchholz is also Philip Ruddock's surprise replacement as the government's Chief Whip.
Along with making sure there are enough MPs in parliament to vote, this means the LNP member will be tasked with keeping his ear to the ground - understanding the concerns of the backbench and reporting back to the Prime Minister.
While Ruddock is well known to everyone as the father of the House, Buchholz has not played such a prominent role in politics to date.
A relative newcomer, he has held the south-western Queensland seat of Wright since 2010. Before that, he had a trucking business, worked in agri-finance and directed Lifeline Community Care. He was also a former chief-of-staff to Barnaby Joyce.
Joyce, now the Minister for Agriculture, describes him as a "very genuine" person, who loves a big hug and is has a "very, very direct" way of speaking.
"Sometimes disturbingly direct," he said.
Joyce recalls a time when Buchholz was babysitting a group of children, including Joyce's own, who were all under eight. Buchholz was so direct when it came to telling the kids to go to bed that they started crying.
While Buchholz originally wanted to run for the Senate, Joyce convinced him he was better suited to the lower house.
"I can't see him being deep and philosophical," he explains, adding that Buchholz is much more of a people person.
Fellow Queensland Coalition MP Wyatt Roy agrees.
"I love having a beer with Scott and he's a good bloke," he said.
Member for Brisbane Teresa Gambaro similarly describes Buchholz as "well respected and liked by the backbench".
Joyce is confident that the member for Wright will have no problems pulling MPs into line if they are playing "silly buggers" in the Parliament. He has run a medium-sized business and knows how to manage people.
But there are others within the Liberal party room for whom Buchholz' appointment last Friday was a puzzle, noting there are other candidates who are also deeply loyal to Tony Abbott but better qualified.
For example, while Buchholz had been a Whip since the election in 2013, West Australian MP Nola Marino had five years' experience as opposition Whip under her belt on top of experience while in government.
Abbott has defended his sacking of Ruddock as a renewal, to forge a "stronger relationship" with his backbench.
But some Coalition MPs argue that Buchholz is not the right person for the job. They say the backbench will not adequately confide in him and he will be so loyal to the Prime Minister that he will not give Abbott the honest assessment of the party room that he needs.
There are also concerns that given his background with deputy Nationals leader Joyce, he instinctively errs more on the National side of the LNP than the Liberal.
Buchholz did not return calls from Fairfax Media, when asked to comment about his new job.
