Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will stage a joint media conference in Brisbane shortly with Nauru's president Baron Waqa to announce details of the proposed new asylum seeker camp on the tiny Pacific island.
Mr Waqa flew to Australia on Friday for talks with the Australian government, but discussions have been difficult.
Negotiations over the location of the new centre and the number of refugees to be detained there have been treated delicately.
The Nauru government has been in difficult negotiations with local landowners, with talks intensifying following a recent riot that almost destroyed the main detention centre on Nauru.
Mr Rudd's media conference is scheduled to take place shortly before 3pm Saturday.
