Late on Thursday night the government signalled that it would not accept the repeal bill as amended by the Senate when it comes back to the House of Representatives for approval on Friday.

The government will look to send the bill back to the Senate as soon as today for another vote on the unamended bill.

On the same day the Abbott government finally repealed the carbon tax, Palmer United Party senators supported the government’s repeal of the minerals resource rent tax in a late night Senate vote.

The mining tax was introduced by Labor back in 2010.

But PUP senators also voted with Labor and the Greens to support amendments that preserved the School Kids Bonus, low income superannuation contribution and the income support bonus linked to and funded by the mining tax.

Speaking to Fairfax Media immediately after the vote, Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said the amended bill would deliver a $10 billion hit to the budget and that “anyone who wanted to scrap the mining tax has got to support the mining tax repeal bill unamended”.

“This will go back to the House of Representatives tomorrow [Friday] where these amendments that were passed tonight will be rejected,’’ he said.

“The question will be if they [the PUP] want to scrap it, they won’t be able to insist on those amendments.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott also issued a veiled warning to the PUP senators, telling ABC radio on Friday morning that the government had gone to the election ''with a very clear position''.

''We said that we would abolish the mining tax but we would also abolish the spending that the tax was supposed to fund. You can’t get rid of the tax responsibly without also getting rid of the spending,'' he said.

''We wore the opprobrium and unpopularity of saying that the schoolkids bonus would go because it was a cash splash with borrowed money.''

During debate, PUP senator Jacqui Lambie said her party was happy to repeal the tax but was determined to stop cuts that would hurt families.

But Senator Cormann told her that the government had been very clear with voters before the election that it would scrap both the tax and the related measures the Senate had voted to keep.

Greens leader Christine Milne said the school kids bonus and low income support bonus were “not large sums of money but they really matter to people who have very little”.

Senator Milne said the three PUP senators had a conflict of interest because the tax would apply to mines owned by their leader, mining magnate Clive Palmer.

After the vote, Senate President Stephen Parry ruled that fellow Liberal Senator Ian Macdonald had been “disorderly” for donning a high-vis “Australians for Coal” provided by the Minerals Council shirt during the debate earlier in the evening.

Greens Senator Scott Ludlam was also ruled to have acted in a disorderly fashion for holding up a protest sign that read “SRSLY!” during Senator Macdonald’s speech.

Senator Macdonald's Coalition colleague Bill Heffernan was not impressed.

‘‘This is a bloody commercial message,’’ he thundered, waving his own high-vis shirt still in its packet.

‘‘I’ve told the Minerals and Mining Council to shove this and everyone else should, too.’’

The Minerals Council of Australia, which is behind the Australians for Coal website, confirmed it had sent the shirts to all members and senators about two months ago.

It was intended to showcase the work of a ‘‘fantastic indigenous company’’ that supplies the mining industry, a council spokesman said.
