But now, he has come up with another strategy to hang on to his job.

At a visit to a childcare centre in Sydney's west, the Prime Minister officially declared that it was "Back to Work Tuesday".

"We are focussed on doing the right thing by the people of Australia," he said, before nominating a list of "work" items to celebrate the day, from a small business tax cut to childcare reform.

With Back to Work Tuesday, Abbott is telling the country that there is "nothing to see here" and importantly, ordering his colleagues back to their offices, desks and meeting rooms, where hopefully they will forget all about their leader's apparent deficiencies.

But will Back to Work Tuesday work? (Most people go back to work on a Monday, after all.)

To shore up his approach, the Prime Minister should not stop with one day, but keep going with the whole week.
