If only it were as easy to buy for family and friends as it would be, given a never-emptying wallet and perhaps a magic wand, to make our federal politicians happy this Yuletide.

So what would our political leaders really like to find under the Christmas tree?

Prime Minister Tony Abbott: A Fitbit

Not only does this modern marvel complete the runner's look, but it measures their achievements as well.

Mr Abbott, who has recently passed 100 days since the election and will mark 100 days in office on Boxing Day, has been spending a fair bit of time talking about the progress he has made on his goals. Like a marathon runner carefully marking milestones along the way, he can mark off every step he takes in his first term in office.

Joe Hockey: A Magic Pudding economy

In Norman Lindsay's children's book, the cranky Magic Pudding (Albert) gets no pleasure from anything but being eaten, and every time someone eats part of Albert, he regenerates into a whole pudding again.

If only Mr Hockey had an Albert economy to draw upon, he could fund his paid-parental leave scheme, fill the budget black hole left by Labor, give a lazy few million dollars to Holden, Toyota, Qantas and SPC workers, and have money left over for education, health and community groups.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten: A Steven Bradbury doll

Remember Bradbury, the Australian ice skater who surprised no one more than himself when he won gold at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games after all his opponents fell over and he just kept skating? After a ReachTEL/Seven News survey became the third poll in as many weeks to put Shorten's Labor Party in a winning position, the Opposition leader must be hoping he can keep skating while the prime minister stumbles.

But Mr Abbott became the master of Bradbury skating in opposition, and may still have a few tricks up his sleeve.

Palmer United Party MP Clive Palmer: Ripley's Believe It or Not! Special Edition 2014

The man who promises to continue his unofficial role as ''Australia's most colourful politician'' in 2014 has told some ripper tales in the past year.

Mr Palmer, who for a long time listed ''litigation'' as a hobby in his Who's Who entry, claimed the Greens were in cahoots with the CIA to wipe out coalmining in Australia. He also claimed that the former Mrs Rupert Murdoch, Wendi Deng, was a Chinese spy, that Australian Electoral Office divisional returning officers were ex-officers from the Australian armed forces, and his personal phone and email account had been bugged by Australian security agencies ''for about 10 or 15 years''. He's going to need more material in the new year.

Greens leader Christine Milne: drum pants.

Bear with me here. According to futurists, drum pants - yes, trousers with in-built drum kits the length of the legs - are set to be the big new thing in 2014, and as leader of the Greens, Senator Milne has to be all over the newest fad going.

Quinoa has gone the way of roasted beetroot and goat's cheese salads (so passe), same-sex marriage advocacy is positively mainstream (even Malcolm Turnbull is doing it), and Sarah Hanson-Young isn't going to let anyone else near the refugees. Senator Milne needs a new, funky cause, and drum pants are as good as any.

Now, how on earth are we going to wrap these?
