Gough Whitlam was the prime minister of several generations, the last of whom it can be said that he transformed both his country and the lives of its citizens, generally for the better. Travelling with him on his great adventure was exhilarating and sometimes dangerous, but, for many Australians, it was the more exciting and inspiring for being pioneering and enlarging.
