When Malcolm Turnbull was elected Liberal leader on Monday night, Liberal supporters disillusioned with Tony Abbott were not the only ones celebrating.

On social media, in Sydney's Oxford Street and in lounge rooms around the country, progressively minded Australians cheered the rise of the man who has been a darling of the left for years.
After all, the member for Wentworth was the guy who championed action on climate change, who believed in same-sex marriage, wanted a republic and had the latest gadgets even before the hipsters.
He was the Abbott minister who continued to be a friend of the ABC and who launched the left-ish leaning The Saturday Paper.
No wonder then that in Tuesday's Morgan Poll, 50 per cent of Labor supporters backed Turnbull, to 44 per cent for Bill Shorten. Greens voters backed Turnbull, 57 per cent to 38 per cent.
But should the left really be hailing a Turnbull prime ministership as a victory for "their" side? There are several reasons why they should not get too excited.
1. The Liberal right
Turnbull came mortally unstuck as Liberal leader in 2009 when he tried to force the more conservative elements of the party to support Kevin Rudd's emissions trading scheme.
If Turnbull has learned from the experience, he will know he can't come in and impose his personal policy preferences on the entire party. Hence, Turnbull stating there will be no change to the party's previously established positions on same-sex marriage (to hold a plebiscite) and emissions reduction targets.
2. The Nats
The Nationals are not historically well disposed to Turnbull. They did not enjoy Turnbull's earlier leadership of the party. Note Warren Truss and Barnaby Joyce making threats that they would not necessarily join a Coalition with someone other than Abbott.
And the deal that Turnbull has had to strike to keep them on board, which includes increasing payments for stay-at-home mums.
3. Process, process
One of the reasons Liberal MPs walked away from Abbott was the former PM's predilection for "captain's calls". Both front and backbenchers despaired that Abbott was not consulting the party room or the cabinet adequately.
Hence, Turnbull will need to work hard to unite the party by listening to all their broad church views and taking them on board. He will really have to pick his battles.
Just look at his language in his first press conference about how the "culture" of his leadership would be "thoroughly consultative".
4. The budget situation
There are calls already for Turnbull to make childcare, PPL and dole payments more generous. But amid all the policy arguments that will be put forward, he will need to keep an eagle eye on the budget.
He has already singled out the economy and economic messaging as his key priority. And talked about the "great challenges" that Australia faces here.
5. Turnbull is a member of the Liberal Party
Turnbull has previously denied reports he ever tried to join the ALP, even though he claims Labor has repeatedly tried to woo him over the years.
"If I'd wanted to be a member of the Australian Labor Party, I would have been one," he said in 2009.
6. His ascension to the prime ministership makes a Labor victory at the next election a lot less likely
When looking at all voters surveyed, the Morgan Poll had Turnbull thumping Shorten, 74 per cent to 24 per cent as preferred Prime Minister.
Abbott's departure will see voters take a fresh look at the Labor leader, who for the past two years has enjoyed a largely pressure-free run.
As commentators have noted, like Abbott, Shorten is not particularly personally popular. Recent focus groups described the Labor leader as "tacky and fake" and "spineless and boring".
