Video of racial tirade on bus goes viral
On a Melbourne bus on November 11, a man started a race-based attack against some French women, in particular one. Passenger Mike Nayna turned on his camera.PT2M14S http://www.canberratimes.com.au/action/externalEmbeddedPlayer?id=d-29oxr 620 349 November 21, 2012
Chief Commissioner Ken Lay would be entitled to take to strong drink.
He (and predecessors Simon Overland, Christine Nixon and Neil Comire) have devoted increased resources to confronting domestic violence and threats against women.
The message has been that females should be safe to go about their daily lives without fear.
A grab from video of the racial abuse.
It's not that much to ask, is it?
We have seen the public outpouring of emotion over the dreadful murders of Jill Meagher and Sarah Cafferkey which shows that many in the community want a better way.
After Jill Meagher's murder thousands marched in Brunswick in an impromptu anti-violence protest – good people united.
And then we have a video of a group of people on a bus abusing, threatening and vilifying some French girls whose crime it seems is to have sung a song in their national tongue.
Look at the main protagonist for a moment (as more than 300,000 people have via YouTube). His complexion is flushed, possibly from anger, blood pressure, or the exertion of yelling into the phone.
He has a cigarette behind one ear and sunglasses on top of his head – even though it is night. It is a fair assumption that he is not on his way to a brain surgery convention – unless as a live donor.
He is yelling into the phone, not to be heard over the rabble, but to seek their approval. For him, mediocrity is lifted for a few minutes as he has a brief moment in the sun (hence the sunglasses).
"S.O.D. speak English or die, motherf-----," he yells. Interestingly this dinky-di Aussie chooses a profanity made popular through American movies and usually uttered by a millionaire black actor.
The rage of those seen uttering the threats on the video is staggering.
We can argue mass hysteria, poor education or oppressive background.
Or they are just dropkicks.
There have always been idiots and there have always been violent ones. Now they are being caught on camera to their shame, and our international embarrassment.
Ken Lay says we are making progress, and he is right. When we recently did a patrol with police in King Street, Melbourne there were flashes of violence but largely the nightclubs were filled with people having a non-threatening night out.
In our experience, young men and women are civil to each other and respect each other's life choices. I cannot recall hearing anyone I know under 25 making a racist or homophobic comment.
I know plenty twice that age who still think The Black and White Minstrel Show was cutting-edge culture.
In the scheme of things the bus video is no big deal. The offenders will be caught and charged with minor offences. No one was stabbed or bashed, mutilated or mugged.
Phone man used up a about two of his 15 minutes of fame on the bus with the brain dead. He will have the remaining 13 in the magistrate's court.
There were some on the bus encouraging him, but there would have been others, understandably too intimidated to protest
Rightly or wrongly, Julia Gillard's famous misogynist speech received international plaudits after it went viral. Now phone man's S.O.D. rant is off and running – although an invitation to address the UN General Assembly is unlikely to arrive any time soon.
These are the sort of irrational goons police have to deal with on a daily basis. Talk to coppers who investigate and charge the men who attack women and they will say that away from the pack most are pretty weak individuals.
On Tuesday, members of the Special Operations Group arrested Steven James Hunter over the murder of Sarah Cafferkey.
When they surrounded the Hawthorn flat and ordered him to surrender he immediately ran out and lay on the ground.
Then he wet himself.
