Federal Election 2013 Live: August 23, 2013

  • It has taken the media a fair while to work out that Rudd is in danger of losing his own seat of Griffith. Good luck getting "the real folk" to vote for you Kevin, instead of Dr. Bill Glasson. Either way, Rudd will be replaced in this seat. Labor are losing the election, and there is no way that Labor will keep Rudd as leader after that. Glasson will win a subsequent bi-election by a country mile.

Why do you conservatives get so wound up about ALP spending but not care about Liberal spending - is it just becasue the liberal spending goes to the wealthy while the ALP spend money on the poor?

Well the poor dears I suggest they toughen up because 4 am rises are a taste of the real world for them.

Nurses, personal trainers, news agency workers and owners, builders, shift workers, street cleaners, you know the real workers, all get out of bed at this time. So exactly what are they whingeing?

    • Here is the Business spectator view of Abbott PPL "tax grab"

"Had the Coalition simply cut company tax by 1.5 per cent, without then topping that up again with a 1.5 per cent ‘levy’ (which is really a tax), all shareholders would be better off. The companies they own would have extra profit, extra money to invest. Shares would in most cases increase in captital value, as well as produce larger distributions down the line.

However, the 3200 companies that will be slugged with the levy represent nearly 80 per cent of Australian company earnings. So the SME sector gets a boost with a tax cut starting in July 2015, but big companies actually go backwards.
That’s because to give their shareholders the same yields they’re used to, they will have to dip into funds otherwise earmarked for re-investment in the business
the tax grab is worth around $1 billion.

Did you read what you posted? They said these companies would have to still maintain their dividends (otherwise shareholders will drop them), so the shareholder does not lose out like you claim!
There will be other factors that will help these businesses profit such as the dumping of the GST, etc. So to use the PPL on it's own is very mis-leading.
I would have thought an "Accountant" would understand this....

Money taken from business and given to PPL rich women will ultimately be paid for by us with increased prices.

        • Ed, With the half-way point in this Federal Election campaign now reached, much can be said re the ALP's campaign and from reading through the responses posted so far on this page, Kevin Rudd's performance can't be ignored.
We all know that the ALP doesn't like Mr Abbott leading the federal parliamentary wing of the Liberal Party and secondly, remain desperate to "score" some political points on him. However, let's not forget as we approach - polling day, that this country is in deep water and will need a rescue operation to be mounted. This morning, we learn that Ford is to wind back its operation due to the FBT and does the Rudd led government, really think that job security isn't under "growing" threat? It's not hard to realise that things aren't good for the Australian business community and this one. Why are official interest rates declining to a record low?? We should also remember that there was a swing away from Mr Rudd in his own seat, at the last election.

          • The Liberal Party have a pattern of implementing policies that benefit the rich at the expense of the poor and middle class.

Whether or not they implement an increase in GST, or reintroduce WorkChoices, you know that they want to do it.

When in power, they can tweak laws to get what they want, and most of it probably won't get reported.

They will shift more of the tax burden from the rich to the middle class.

            • Sounds like class warfare to me Tone. Funny how that term is only applied to those who question this and try to address inequality. A Labor PM should be saying the things Rudd is saying. Frankly, the Coalition has a history of tossing money around like it's confetti, with most falling on those who don't really need it.

Brings to mind the image of Rudd struggling to do a single pull up and having to get a minder to lift him up so his chin brushed the bar not so long ago.

That aside, the men and women of the defence forces will hands down vote for the coalition given Labor's record in running down the nation's defence capability.

                      • Work at Ford’s key Australian plants in Geelong and Broadmeadows was shut down yesterday and will be again today as car buyers flee the market in the wake of the FBT overhaul. Ford yesterday confirmed that the first of the six shutdowns had begun and the production closures in Victoria had been a direct result of falling demand due to the tax changes, which have been opposed by the Coalition. Where is the ACTU supporting their workers - more interested in saving their ALP - the PM blames the Opposition for not supporting more funds to the car industry - when the PM has caused this problem

                        • It's not about the workers. It's about removing a rort from the tax system that gave people a tax benefit when they were using their vehicles privately. I can understand the taxpayer subsidising business expenses that are legitimate business expenses, but I shouldn't have to pay for someone's private vehicle use.

Australia will be better off removing this rort and redirecting the money to helping the car industry instead of propping up a rort industry.

If you are so concerned about "rorts", you would definitely be against the ALP supporting the unions denying they need to be run under similar "scrutiny" to company directors.
                          Wouldn't you?

People will still fill out a log book under the ALP scheme. People will still "rort" their log books, if they are that way inclined. What happens Tone, if the money the ALP have already "spent" from this grab doesn't come in, just like the mining tax?

                      • Why is the Coalition and Labor’s common goal on climate change completely nonsensical?

Australia’s target for Greenhouse gas emission reduction is “5% below year 2000 levels by 2020”. According to United Nations Statistics Division our emissions in 2000 were 17.2 tonnes per capita with a population of 19.2 million = 330.24 million tonnes of emissions of which 5% is 16.51 million tonnes.

However by 2002 our coal production was 220 million tonnes, by 2012-13 407.2 million with an expectation of reaching at least 611 million tonnes producing 1.747 billion tonnes of emissions in year 2020 alone. Deduct the emission target of 16.51 million from year 2020 produced emissions and target reduction is actually an increase of 1.73 billion tonnes of Co2 in that year alone that is a 1048% increase on the so called reduction? .

The credulousness of calling it a reduction begs belief? Meanwhile Rudd and Abbott trumpet how they believe in climate change and will reach this much vaunted delusional reduction target? Hello, how unsuspecting, naïve, and gullible do they think we are?

There is no reduction, none, zilch, not one atom. Having increased emissions by several billion tonnes and spent billions of taxpayer dollars in the process they add insult to injury, Rudd tells us that emissions are “falling and generally plateauing” and Abbott is to muster a 15000 Green Army?

These are the clowns who expect you to vote for them?

"The people out here" don't like being sneered at and pigeon holed by prejudiced value judgments. There are million dollar properties just down the road from where the PM is right now. We have everyone from battlers Millionaires in the area described as South West Sydney. So we won’t all fall into line in some type of predictable club, especially when some out of Towner waltzes in and thinks he knows us. It’s Best out West! Doesn’t matta parrammatta we all know we live in a Flash suburb and we are more than the ‘People out here’… Don’t feel sorry for us Kev, worry about those poor hippies in the inner city.. we’re happy to let the fruit sellers at flemmo give you our feedback. We’ll just get on with it and look after ourselves like we always do..

                          • Rudd should have been more careful in his words, I agree, but it's more a generalization based on median property values. I'm sure he's referring to areas like Mosman, Vaucluse, Point Piper, Hunters Hill, Balmain etc, which have high medians and therefore a greater proportion of wealth. Of course some wealthy people prefer other parts of Sydney. Heck, foreigners tell me that anyone who buys a house in Sydney must be pretty well off!

                        • First of all, thank you Age for publishing so many of my comments, pointing out the complete lack of media coverage of Aged Policy. Thank you for collecting them all together at the head of the page - I hope that they may be read by others than I.
I am 88 years old, I am personally affected by the facts: briefly again - the Opposition policy consists of another 3-word slogan, 'Cut the paper-work.' I kid you not, that's it.
The Gillard Labor government worked hard and long with leading Aged Care organisations to develop a comprehensive program, costing $3.7billion, LIVING LONGER LIVING BETTER. Ian Yates, CEO of COTA, called it a victory for the elderly, their families, aged care staff, and the industry.
The Opposition voted against it in Parliament, it was passed with the help of the cross benches. Abbott now says 'he will not change it if he wins government, but he has made no costings and has not committed to fully implementing it. Do you trust him?
Come clean Mr Abbott on what you have planned for us oldies beyond the 3-word slogan.

I find it very questionable that under both Rudd and Gillard and thanks to their obscene spending, Customs now doesn't have the staff to monitor all shipping container traffic into Australia via several ports and secondly, monitoring has dropped from I think 60 to 11 per cent. The Federal Government continues to breed a disturbing environment which lends support to a warning from ASIO that, the real threat to this country's security will come from within? Surely, our borders need a massive injection of funding to protect this country and those who live within it?

                                    • Results of two experimental studies described constituted clear experimental demonstration of how polls influence voters. Findings showed that voters tended to vote for the candidate that they were told was leading in the polls. These poll-driven effects on votes were substantial.
Effects of polls on votes tended to be operative throughout a wide spectrum of voters. Voters with initial (i.e., pre-poll) preferences ranging from undecided to moderately strong were influenced by polling data. There was a limit on poll effects, however, as noted in Study Two: Polls failed to influence votes when voter preferences were very strong to begin with.
Additional findings of considerable interest showed that effects of polls were stronger for women than for men and also were stronger for more arousable (i.e., more emotional) and more submissive (or less dominant) persons.

                                        http://www.kaaj.com/psych/abstract/pollsabstract.html

Somehow, the fact that you are questioning your ability to be influenced by polls shows that the Polling Snowball effect probably doesn't affect you at all.

In short, the more people are aware of the Polling Snowball effect, the less likely the media will continue to rely on reporting bogus, biased poll results from newly-established, robo-polling companies. Spread the word!

                                      • If the raw anti-Abbott sentiment expressed in Northcote any day of the week were to be replicated on Sept 7 then the Coalition will be wiped out.

Coalition commenters have this amazingly disproportionate idea of how many people in the country are on their side. They're in an echo-chamber.

I'm in business. I know plenty of Coalition voters. I don't pretend everyone votes Labor. I also know there's plenty of people who see through the Coalition's flim-flam on the economy, who believe in climate change, who approve of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the Gonski reforms and the NBN, and who aren't intolerant about gay people.

Northcote is not a swinging marginal seat so irrelevant. BTW, I'm not a coalition anything. I would laugh just as loud if Abbott was dumb enough to go cruising for a bruising in Northcote.

                                      • The idea of cutting GST returns down to one a year is of real interest to me. Being the government's tax collector is something I could do without - as a small business operator. This is the first real small business policy announcement that has appealed to me. People talk about red tape in business and yes there is a bit of it, but the GST stuff is one of the biggest burdens. I would love to see it simplified. Will we see some policy debate on this or will every journos questions to the pollies today be about robopolls?

                                      • I don't see the point of having an annual return if you still have to pay quarterly. You will still need to do the work and preapre an anlysis of your GST position to calculate your quarterly liability. Completion of the BAS return itself is the quickest part (its only a 3 line document for most people). The time consuming part is the claculation off the liability.

                                                  • A few days ago, I needed to see the australian dollar rate, and I could not believe my eyes. How it was so strong money on the world for tha last 3 or 4 years as I know, it is getting weaker and weaker, and which identifies its economy is getting worse and worse from day to day. WHO is responsible for all these mess? LP, they should pay for this, namely, Julia Gillard. I don't understand Kevin Rudd, why he took the power just 1 month before the election??? All the wastes (shits) thrown for the last a few years should have been picked up by Julie Gillard's hands, not Kevin Rudd? Kevin Rudd is a clever man, but in this case he made an error. Julie Giilard should go through all these election to the end for LP, but now Kevin Rudd is struggling to the end, I understood that the Australian eceonomy is not strong as it was a few years ago, and its bank note is getting patterned coloured wall paper. Who is responsible for this? Labour Party, to change its leadership is its internal problem, in 2010, 2013, but they have no right to sacrifice 20 million people's life. It is completely different concept to lead a country from leading a party or washing party members' brain to get power and become a party leader, maybe Julie Gillard thought so. But now it shows everything. Kevin Rudd was a leader but I think, he losing his power. People are not stupid. Look at the economy. To conclude, LP deserve to pay for all these messes??? That's it.

Or was it the time he went outside the wire?
More likely a training run to the mess hall to get the pies for lunch.

                                                                • In some ways the best thing that could happen to the Labor party right now is Rudd losing his seat.

If Labor do lose the election, a renewal process will need to start. There won't be able to be real renewal if the new leader (Shorten?) has the the large and toxic shadow of Rudd sitting over his shoulder on a daily basis, like Gillard did.

Labor have spent six years talking about well, Labor. Before they're ready to govern again, they'll need to start talking about Australians.

If Abbott wins however, Liberal supporters will be stuck with him for at least three torturous years of cringe-worthy diplomatic gaffes.

The lesser one is then taken out of the equation and we might get the best of a bad bunch for Opposition leader. While I'm no fan of Turnbull I'd feel better about a Coalition win the election after (assuming Turnbull continues with the Labor version of the NBN; would be hard not to at that point). So it's a WIN, WIN, WIN! Seriously people, is there anything wrong with that plan?

Those of us over 60 years old who were too old to benefit to a large degree from superannuation , it is the franked dividends that keeps us off the pension, and believe me at times it is not easy. The $1.6 b taxed from companies that pay us the dividend to which already tax has been payed is worse that high way robbery. At our age we should not be used as cash caw so you can get the key to the Lodge. Tax the international miners at higher rate, as well as the polluters, but leave us in our old age with some dignity for which we have worked and saved hard, thank you.

The sanctimonious lefties complain about Tony not looking after shareholders and profits for Blue chip companies and being too generous to working Mothers…. I don’t even know if you guys actually listen to yourself before you launch into Liberal campaigning….
Rational people know that killing the Carbon Tax and Mining tax will result in more dividend income in their super funds. So desperate to find a ‘Gotcha’ the Labor fan club cannot see how much they are contributing to Abbotts inevitable success, as they complain about Tony being too progressive. Whilst desperately lurching to the right on Border protection, Labor have been outflanked on the Left on PPL and are now forced to argue against the progressives that would normally be voting for them.

You do realise that the 2 primary agencies, Moody's has had Australia rated AAA since October 2002 and S&P since Feb 2003. Fitch had us at AA+ in Feb 2002. So labor achieved one upgrade from Fitch, AA+ to AAA and we have been put on notice by all agencies that they need to see a credible path to surplus if they are to be maintained, something labor have so far been unable to provide. In comparison the coalition improved all 3 ratings from 1996 levels of AA2, AA & AA. Previously Hawke had managed to lose both AAA ratings in 1986. Just another Labor lie about their achievements.

Anyway, the point is that it was the coalition that restored the 2 AAA credit ratings lost under Labor and set us on the path to the third. We are now in a position where all 3 will shortly be at risk if no credible path to surplus is shown. There was never any threat to our credit rating going backward under the coalition. So if you ask me what's best, a party that starts from a low base and builds to the top or a party that starts at the top and pushes us to the edge of the cliff I'll choose the builder every time.

Japan has never recovered from the AFC. Howard and Costello didn't use panicked spending, instead they used prudent financial management and fostered business and consumer confidence. We came out of this period with budget surpluses and strong growth as the mining boom kicked in. In comparison Rudd, Swan and Gillard panicked, with the mining boom in full swing. Threw money everywhere, destroyed business and consumer confidence with their panicked spending. We came out of that with massive budget deficits, a slowing economy, huge debt and no business or consumer confidence. To any thinking person you can see which party handled the crisis' better.

Wow, that's all you have to excuse the labor lie that they are responsible for our AAA credit rating. Either way you slice it labor has a $200b + net / $400b gross debt compared to being left with net and gross debt less than $0. Labor started with 2 AAA credit ratings with positive outlooks, they will most likely leave with 3 AAA ratings in serious threat and a generation of debt to repay, with an $11b annual interest bill that could pay for Gonski and the NDIS.

And please Morrison - do you us all a big favour and retire from politics - you are the people smugglers best friend... seriously retire now!

But bottom line - buying rickety boats from 'average' Indonesian people is madness - I've seen the poverty in that country close at hand and it'll never work - seriously never.

At one stage I was contemplating a conspiracy; all our comments erased and perhaps the whole day; anything to take back the terrible buying boats policy (and try to fool us they never suggested it). Phew! I started to wonder if I had imagined it all.

Now I've forgotten my point... Anyway, if your poll figures are a close match to reality, it would be bizarre. Even many Libs don't like the Lib policies! And business isn't happy either. I also get the impression that the average punter prefers Labor policies over the Lib ones. Plus no one could accuse Abbott of being a statesman, a smooth-talker who seduces the nation. But despite all this, I agree that the Coalition is probably in the box seat. Just bizarre!

He visited Indonesia met the leaders there then flew to New Guinea. Got an agreement and an agreement was finalised. No beating about the bush.

Some of them earn over a hundred grand and I don't believe its capped at all.

He appears to be pointing to how much better Tony is doing in the Polls than he is. Now Mr Burke seems to think Labor are going to romp it in! Don't think so we have long memories of a dysfunctional federal government and plenty of past dysfunctional Labor state governments and other's on life support. But good luck with your thinking. Perhaps the Robopolls are nearer the mark. Perhaps the PM's recent frequent school visits tells us that he thinks that Labor are gone for all money and that by appealing to these guys might be Labor's only way back.

Looks like the online betting agencies aren't prepared to put their money where their odds are.

Also, it just ocurred to me that it would be well within the interests of these online gambling companies to get an LNP govt, as they know the LNP will just make things easier and more profitable for them....so these odds are just like a form of additonal advertising for the Liberal party. Pity...I reckon I could have easily swindled them for about $350.
