    • All this campaigning by Albanese and Shorten, to become Oppisition leader, just who exactly will be paying for that?

It would that the taxpayer will be paying for all the trip, campaigning and other costs of both candidates, now that the election is over. Given that this represents a radical departure from the manner in which party leaders have, in the past, typically been elected, is it fair for the taxpayer to have to pay for a further 30 days of active leadership campaigning? Undoubtedly, the ALP would say, yes. But, maybe not, others.

      • Wlll Bill Shorten ever stop whinging? He helped in the destruction of the most incompetent group of people to ever hold office and his whinging continues.. perhaps he could go and sharpen some knives or analyser the reasons why the labor Government proved to be so dysfunctional.

        • Wouldn't the ALP, especially someone like Bill Shorten, be smart to keep his head down and mouth closed for the next few months ?

Each time they have a crack at Abbott it reminds us all why the Coalition are now in government.

          • Nah, I'd argue that's there's never been a better time to hold Abbott to account. We need our new government to back up its 3 years of ranting with actual outcomes. Especially since all indications are that our worst fears about Abbott's neo-con, sexist agenda are being realised.

                • Be very careful my friend when looking at the Last Supper, all is not what it seems:

                  From Leonardo’s Notebook:

[9] Another [disciple] speaks into his
neighbors ear and he, as he listens, he turns towards him to lend an ear.”
The Gospel of John John’s head was resting on Jesus Simon Peter gestured to him [John] and said, “Ask him [Jesus ] of whom is He speaking.” He [John] , leaning back on Jesus said, “Lord, who is it [the traitor].”

                  Where is Yeshua? not centre?

Just try to keep deluding yourself that the ALP was a "good" government, with no budget blowouts, secure border policies, a thriving economy with less than 5% unemployment, and most of all, a loyal and united caucus.

The rest of us know otherwise.

                      • There was a time when I credited you with possession of common sense.

Obviously it did not stretch to the extent: "As a result of recent problems, industry revenue within the Australian fishing industry has been forecast to contract by an annualised 6.3% over the five years through 2012-13, to total a value of $1.19 billion.

The Australia fishing market has struggled to perform over the past five years due to the ongoing depletion of fish stocks.

Additionally, wild catches of fish, crustaceans and molluscs have decreased over the past five years. Although depletion has played a significant role in reduced wild catches, attempts by the government to curb catches to sustainable levels has also affected catch volumes."

So bring on the super trawler and forget fish and chips, right Hacka?

He fought valiantly to block the return of Rudd, then fought valiantly to keep Rudd in the Lodge, then he seems to have valiantly disappeared, since the Fairfax pay wall came in.

Although i must admit, sometimes reading a couple of regular the journos .... ahem "contributions" .... i might agree with BillR on that one.

What is the role of parliament in selecting/electing the Prime Minister? I thought that the House of Rep's needed to sit and elect the PM.

                        • TonyB. Not quite. The Prime Minister is not a role actually recognised in the Constitution. It is actually the most senior minister to the head of state, in this case the Governor-General representing the Queen.

Therefore the decision to appoint a Prime Minister is technically in the gift of the GG. In reality, the GG will appoint the person that she believes is most likely to command a majority in the House of Reps and therefore can pass legislation and initiate money bills.

We all know, from the election results, that this will be confirmed when the Parliament eventually sits.

In 2010, the GG waited until all the Independents declared who they would support before renewing Julia Gillard's appointment. Once Katter, Oakeshott and Windsor had declared their positions, the GG had good reason to think that only Julia Gillard would have the confidence of the House - and so it transpired when the House met.

That is why Abbott was so outrageously dishonest in suggesting that Gillard's appointment was somehow legally illegitimate. It was not - he knew that - but he still used the claim to inspire the ignorant haters to believe that the will of the electorate had not been given effect.

Now back to the real world - and real problems. When will Tony try to turn the first boat back? What will happen? Will we see ADF personnel injured or die?

I do not know what he will be like as Prime Minister but I like the fact that because he has a big majority we are likely to have stability and consistency during at least this first term. We should all be so grateful for the democratic system under which we live. ALP supporters feel bad at the moment. LNP supporters have felt bad for the past six years. We should all remember that "this too shall pass" In the meantime I think the LNP government will do an okay job. Australia has only first world problems and only rarely experiences a nightmare. Long may it stay that way. Our country is safe and free; let us be happy.

But Tony Abbott has been the most nasty, negative, nihilistic opposition leader in my lifetime. His position on every issue was never to ask what is good for Australia, but what is good for his pursuit of power. His refusal to give the Malaysian People swap deal a chance will always stand for me as the most dishonourable and disreputable thing an Opposition leader has done. And to call a press conference virtually celebrating every asylum seeker death on Labor's watch only compounded the villainy.

He cannot behave so viciously and mendaciously in Opposition and expect that people like me will let him happily throw the sweetness and light switch once he gets what he wants.

For all the people who sit and do nothing but type criticism. May I suggest you go and get a job!

                                  • But isn't that just what the newly elected government have been doing for six years? Why are the opposition now suddenly expected to be 'encouraging and supportive' of government policy? Abbott and his team has set the tone. Negativity apparently worked for them. Why should the ALP be expected to act any differently? (By the way I do have a job. It is not just coalition supporters who work!)

                                  • It has been reported by the Canberra Times that three Departmental Heads have been sacked, including Andrew Metcalfe.

Andrew Metcalfe was the architect of Howard's Pacific solution covering the period when he was Ruddock's Chief of Staff, Deputy Secretary of Immigration and Deputy Secretary in the PM's Department.

Metcalfe also told Abbott that reopening Nauru would not work again and designed the Malaysian People Swap, which Abbott opposed because it could have worked and then the boats might have stopped on Labor's watch (and asylum seekers might not have died subsequently).

Now what this shows is that no matter how much service you provide the Liberals, they will always treat you badly if you cross them in the end. Metcalfe was absolutely right. He said Nauru would not work again - and it didn't!

Moral of the story is don't tell Tony what he does not want to hear, even if it is the truth, if you want to keep your job.

Falling foul of Vanstone would be a plus mark, even in the Liberal Party.

                                    • Like the budget "emergency", the boat issue has been downgraded already.
That's three policies on which Abbott has fallen short.
He promised us a 3 star general to deal with the boats but has only delivered a 2 star.
He has circumcised NBN but cutting off the bit at the end.
He will only spend X amount money on Emissions and if that doesn't meet the target then he downgrades the target.

                                    • Re: “Departmental heads have been sacked… Blair Comley (the former head of the Department of Climate Change).”

Now ask why Murdoch an American billionaire publisher wished to spend millions on seeing Abbott elected? What was in it for Murdoch? Answer scrapping the carbon price/ETS. Why? Dear Rupert has millions invested in a company called Genie Oil and Gas a subsidiary of Genie Energy (NYSE:GNE), which has invested heavily in affordable technologies to produce transport fuels from kerogen-based shale oil.

However the carbon price/ETS makes oil extraction from shale rock less profitable if at all. Though Abbott’s farcical climate change policy actually pays people like Murdoch to extract oil from shale providing the process proves to reduce the carbon footprint. However, the process is usually a very dirty one in terms of carbon pollution, Murdoch claims:

“Climate change very slow but real. So far all cures worse than disease. Shale gas huge breakthrough for US. Half carbon of coal and oil” (R. Murdoch, July 2012).

Estimates are of six basins in Australia stretching from coastal Queensland to W.A.’s far northwest contain recoverable shale resources of as much as 17.5 billion barrels of oil and 437 trillion cubic feet of gas?

Science dictates that “compared to coal, the footprint of shale gas is at least 20% greater and perhaps more than twice as great on the 20-year horizon and is comparable when compared over 100 years," (Robert Howarth, professor of ecology and environmental biology, Cornell University).

Howarths study follows a US EPA report of the first significant update by the agency on natural gas emission factors since 1996, and concludes “that emissions – particularly for shale gas – are larger than previously believed.”

Now do you understand why Comley had to go for dear Rupert’ sake?

I find it interesting that Rudd sacked no-one in 2007, even Jane whats-her-name who had been moved from her "children overboard" lies job to Health was allowed to stay on.

Yet Howard sacked 6 and Abbott 3, and remember Metcalfe was in DIMIA as it then was during Howard years.

With there being no significant warming for fifteen years but an explosion in government debt in less than six, I know what most rational people would be concerned about.

Both sides have plans to pay it off well within a decade. Meanwhile the interest burden each year is 4 or so billion. To put that in perspective, obesity is estimated to cost us $126 billion a year. A rational person might also pay some attention to the scientific community's warning on global warming.

Just think how hot it would be today if we did not have a carbon tax for the last year. Given the planet hasnt warmed since 1997, it might just be a smigin colder than 1997 but it might be a tiny bit hotter. One thing for sure, given the increase in CO2 levels have increased expodentially since 1997 there must be a question as to its effect on the cooling planet.

Yes, you have been watching too much Bolt report idiocy.

"Variations in global-average temperature over the past century can be measured in the near-surface air, the lowest 10 km of the atmosphere (the troposphere) and in the ocean.

All measurements indicate a long-term warming.

The surface of the Earth has warmed by about 0.74 ˚C since the start of the twentieth century.

This long-term warming trend is overlaid on short-term fluctuations due to such factors as El Niño and La Niña.

Data over the past decade provide little insight into long-term trends; the period is simply too short.

Nevertheless, the past decade has been the warmest in the instrumental record.

Sea surface temperatures and ocean heat content for the upper 300m and 700m of the ocean show long-term warming.

Global average sea level has risen by 17cm during the 20th century."

Sea level rise is due to temperature rise as water expands with increased temperature. The UN report of 840 climate change scientists conclude that sea rise will be almost one metre in 87 years time.

Don't let your kids buy a home on the coast? Oops didn't Bolt tell you this?

Former warmist Professor Dr Fritz Vahrenholt, former Deputy Environmental Minister for Hamburg agrees Roy Spencer, U.S. Science Team leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer on NASA’s Aqua satellite, says the global warming faith is on the brink of collapse as temperatures fail to rise.

Only the dunderheads who believed Abbott's lies and voted for him thought that we were badly off.

It would take at least 10 years of Abbott and his backers to drag us down to where we would want to leave.

Meanwhile we stay here and fight the good fight to stop Abbott's return to the white picket fence and the 1950s (when so many Australians did leave the cultural and moral desert that was Australia) so that Australia can remain the best country in the world.

                                            • JB: "It would take at least 10 years of Abbott and his backers to drag us down to where we would want to leave"...no, the comments I read on the Age & on social media indicated a mass evacuation from this fair country the minute Mr. Abbott took the reins. Guess the mass majority of those people are simply hypocrites, would you not agree?

Also, calling 53% of Australians "dunderheads", to me, shows that you're not a fan of democracy - unless your guys win, of course.

CSIRO scientists informed Abbott that his tree planting climate change policy is fairy land under the moon, short of a few New Testament miracles it won’t work for 100 years and then it’s funding is $4 billion short.

                                            • Science did not disprove the Big Bang Theory. A scientist has suggested an alternative hypothesis. Science thrives on uncertainty.

As far as science is concerned, there is a possibility that gravity does not exist and the world is flat - and that Tony Abbott will be a good Prime Minister.

All of these possibilities of course have an infinitesimal likelihood given all existing evidence.

If you understood science you would not have made such a silly assertion.

For legal purposes such as this, can a Christian use a Koran, I wonder, or a Muslim use the Bible?

I'm not criticising the choice - he can use "Lazarus Rising" as far as I am concerned. I'm just curious.

                                            • What the Christians quaintly call the Old Testament is actually the Jewish Bible. it was stolen by the Christians, which started out as a sect of Judaism in order to justify what it wanted to do (stone homosexuals) and ignore what it did not like (circumcision).

The fact that you are unaware of this - that Zelman Cowan's Bible is the Jewish Bible as much as the Koran is Islamic is truly scary.

After 6years of feeling sadness and disruption to our lives, both past PMs are gone for good. A new beginning that will bring out country back to normalcy, back to sanity and calmness. Yay!

Day 1 and his government is already the worst in our history. 1084 and counting...........

We should have a stable govt over the next 3 years that will deliver business confidence (has already begun), lower unemployment, no unfunded policies like the NDIS and Gonski !! He will undo those policies which are seriously killing our economy and get us back on track like Howard did !! We will be a western economy to be jealous of !!

                                            • A sad day for Australia and yet another slump back into the past. We often thought the previous government was bad, but there is surely far worse to come. Buckle up people because misery and embarrassment lie ahead. If there are any young folk out there who wish to get a glimpse of what life was like in the bleak 'righter-than-white' Australia of the 1950s and 1960s, the next few years will provide ample opportunity to do so.

Which means right now he's at the summit. How long can he stay there, or is there only one way off it ?

                                                • No surplus on the horizon? Are you serious? Australia's debt is $462bn over the forward estimates and currently stands at $300bn. I'd say there would be no surplus forthe first budget and a small one in the second, just like in the Howard/Costello years. Of course, if we can keep the government in long enough we will actually pay the debt off, just like last time and whilst infrastructure development takes off, the unemployment rate falls again and we get the occasional tax cut to boot. Add to this the abolition of the carbon tax and mining supertax.

In any language this is a hiding. A flogging. Face up to it pal because it aint going to change anytime soon. Abbott will probably get voted out like Howard but only after 11 glorious years.

That term could be very short if Abbott goes to a double dissolution over the carbon tax.

All TA and his team need be concerned about is keeping Rupert, Gina et al happy. Can see 'greed is good' making a comeback over the next 3 years.

Seriously, how screwed up does your world view to be celebrating that because it ultimately dovetails with corporate defense if individual car use from a profits perspective.

How can you celebrate removing science from policy and decision making, celebrate removing environmental protections?

                                                      • Liberals have 1 woman in Cabinet.
Labor requires a quota system to get women into Cabinet.
