The alternative is to make your way to the nearest international airport and deport yourself to a republic of your chosing.

  • There’s a streak of nastiness and ignorance in many of these comments.
It’s worth noting this ceremony is no different to previous swearing in ceremonies of Governors General, and the only new addition to the GG’s title is ‘Sir’ and the post nominal AK, instead of AC.
The rest of the pomp and ceremony is a uniquely Australian hybrid- not unlike our Parliamentary system, our courts, our military and our public service. Uniquely Australia, but a product of our heritage- it is what it is, get over it.
Knighthoods are not inherited- this is not a peerage, in fact for most of Australia’s modern history preeminent men and women have been awarded either imperial knighthoods or knighthoods in the Order of Australia.
New Zealand has reinstated knighthoods- and while it is a British influenced title it is clear it is very New Zealand.

Can you outline to us how this will make this nation any better....What will be the one significant difference we will see if it was to happen?
Who will replace the GG as head of state and how could he/she provide all of us with something better than what we already have?
Australia is a nation which was born under the guidance of Britain. Our culture (forget multi-cultures)...Australia's culture, is that of Britain and I for one am proud of that......Please tell us where you would prefer to see us lean......Islam perhaps?
Republicans such as yourself will always crow that we need to be a republic, yet you can not offer us one true benefit that we will see from it......Long live the Queen!!

But this doesn't stop the left from preaching from their self appointed pulpit about how we all should behave and how the duly elected PM should act. The left are too often the enemy of the majority and disrespect the majority. Let the left remain 'the natural party of protest' for a long time to come, and let the rest of us (i.e. the majority) move on in the real world.

For example, since Tuesday, I didn't get the impression that the majority of people agreed with Knights/Dames - quite the opposite (if you look at how frequently it was ridiculed across different media platforms). And yes, personally, I don't agree with it.

The English Civil War might have been painful, but not a bad outcome for the country. Sadly neither the Commonwealth nor the Crown did much good for the Irish, but that is a different story.

                                      • Another reason to bring out the made in the Middle East crockery. Whatever did happen to Xenophon and Madigan's Australian made 'set' and their threat to dump on the PMs doorstep.

A rather expensive week given our Budget Emergency.

Least the Senate will be orderly and interesting unlike the House.

                                        • pres, so you miss the issue. Do you approve of our official crockery being manufactured OS.
Besides if you work out the timing it was probably ordered during Labor's time.
I strongly believe institutions such as PH should support Australian Artisans, Trades and Manufacturing in it's furnishings, equipment etc wholeheartedly.
                                          That is my point.

                                        • Amro Xenophon and Madigan did exactly that, sourced an Aussie co and spent approx $40k in the process to prove a point.
Parliament refuses to use it, hence Xenophon in fine Greek plate smashing tradition proposed to dump it.

However, others who have entered the political realm have had 'a decent past history' - and it hasn't always held true that they 'remained' decent. I'd rather not accept everything in politics at face value.

When he makes his first trip to visit HM The Queen he will be 'invested' with the insignia. He will also probably be made Knight of the Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem which is usually the case for a Governor or Governor General
