Brazil's astounding 7-1 loss to Germany in the World Cup semi-final has been lambasted by footballing fans from every corner of the globe on social media.

No one, apart from a New Zealand man who put $40 on the correct scoreline, could have predicted the shellacking Germany were to hand Brazil in front of their home fans, many of whom were reduced to tears at the half-way mark when the score was 5-0.

Australian striker Tim Cahill unintentionally started a Twitter craze with the hashtag #timcahilling after he posted a photo of himself with his hand over his mouth in a shocked manner when Germany scored their fifth goal in the 29th minute.

There was incredible response to the picture, as thousands of fans also watching the game posted their #timcahilling pictures, mimicking the expression of Australia's all-time leading goal scorer.

There was mates, babies, celebrities and even Matt And Alex from Triple J got in on the act.

There were also some hilarious tweets doing the rounds, with memes, vines and edited pictures all shared thousands of times over.

Past and present football commentators also slammed Brazil's dismal effort, who themselves were still coming to grips with what had unfolded. It was the worst World Cup semi final defeat ever, Brazil's biggest defeat at the World Cup and without doubt the darkest day in Brazilian football.
