RACE OF THE DAY
CHANDLER MACLEOD HANDICAP
This week we turn our attention to Moonee Valley and the Chandler Macleod, an open sprint for fillies and mares.
At a track that really is about horses for courses, Lady Antebellum could be a good bet.
She'll have to beat topweight Avoid Lightning, which is down in class after being competitive in stakes races during the winter.
She is the one to beat but Halle Rockshas won two from three at the Valley over the 1000 metres and drops back to open handicap after racing in the listed Doveton Stakes last start.
BET OF THE DAY
For me she's the pick of the bets based on her Moonee Valley form.
She has two wins and two seconds from six starts here and is looking for a third win at the course on Saturday.
Her last win, over 955m, was very good. Coming from last at the turn the four-year-old chased down her rivals and then burnt them off with searing speed, winning by 2½ lengths.
She meets several of her rivals from a fortnight ago here and you get the feeling she will relish the extra distance - even if it's just 45m.
LAY DOWN YOUR LOBSTER
How to invest $20 on today's races $10 WIN - Moonee Valley race 6, No.7 Lady Antebellum
Looking to extend her winning streak after a dominating run two weeks ago here at Moonee Valley, Lady Antebellum is in the best form of her short career.
There's going to be several horses fighting for the lead in this, which should help Lady Antebellum - from barrier three she can settle near the back of the field.
Will carry just 51.5kg - almost too good to be true.
$5 WIN - Doomben race 5, No.9 Puriffic
Was beaten by what looks like a good horse in Villa Verde at her first start, on Melbourne Cup day, and then finished second again last time in another high-quality race at Sandown.
Steps up to group level here but you get the feeling she is a classy filly ready to break her maiden status. Glen Boss retains the ride, which is enough for me.
$5 WIN - Canterbury race 3, No.4 Soros
Came from the canteen last start to somehow score in a race he had absolutely no right to win.
It appears Peter Moody has worked out how to race this talented son of Lonhro.
Expect Soros to be ridden quietly again here and although this is his most difficult test, he can produce another dashing finish to take the chocolates.
