Census 2011: A beautiful set of numbers

This visualisation displays data from the 2011 census in a playful and interactive way.

This visualisation displays data from the 2011 census in a playful and interactive way.

It only happens once every five years, so you can imagine that when a data drop like the census takes place it can be hard for data junkies (like us) to contain themselves. Take, for example, this tweet from our very own Craig Butt on the day:

@michellegriff It's so exciting! It's like Christmas morning today!

Craig did some great work to get this set of visualisations out within a couple of hours of the data becoming available. He built it using Tableau Public, a tool you see becoming the go-to appliance for lots of quick-turnaround work by journalists, academics and data enthusiasts of all stripes.

There are a lot of things you can do with a bit of data like this, so along with the charts and graphs we know everyone wants and needs, we wanted to inject some play into the release. That's how this visualisation was conceived, with a fair bit of help from London-based coder Jason Davies.

  • I have a sneaking suspicion that an awful lot of lies are told on these forms.

In particular, those renting seem to like to claim otherwise. One 'working class' suburb I know supposedly has a rental rate half the national average.
