Morton, buried on Tuesday, was inducted into the international martial arts hall of fame alongside film star Chuck Norris in 2000, and once threatened to belt a young David Campese if he ever touched a drop of alcohol.

But, in his later years, a more genteel Morton most enjoyed sitting under the trees on a park bench at Queanbeyan's Campese Oval, watching the Whites he helped found, 60 years ago, in 1954.

The bench seat was removed in recent years, because it was in disrepair, but Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall will recommend to the council later this month that a Peter "Froggy" Morton memorial bench be unveiled before the next rugby season.

Morton already has the Queanbeyan Whites pavilion and change rooms name in his honour at Campese Oval, which is named after the legendary Wallabies winger.

"When I first started at Queanbeyan, Froggy came up to me and said 'look, I think you've got a lot of natural talent. If I ever catch you drinking I'll punch the crap out of you'," Campese recalled on a visit back to Australia this week.

"Given he was a black belt in karate, I took it on board. At that stage I used to drink orange juice all the time."

"I'm sure Froggy would say the same, you don't play sport to get grounds or pavilions named after you. It's a great honour, but Froggy just loved the game. I was fortunate to know Peter, he was a humble guy ... a great rugby guy."

Morton died, aged 82, on Melbourne Cup day. People referred to him as a "one-man community service".

He played 200 first grade games with Easts in the ACT rugby union, before returning to found the Queanbeyan Whites at his home town in 1954.

Incredibly, he played another 202 first grade games over 21 years for the Whites, the last - fittingly - against Easts.

The Whites board will have discussions about how to further commemorate Morton's contribution to the club, with suggestions of a trophy to be played for between Queanbeyan and Easts.

Morton who also served as a strapper and coach of the Queanbeyan Whites, was inducted as a life member of the club in 1975. He was a life member of ACT Rugby Union too, from 1979.

Morton could play, too. He represented the ACT from 1953-1960, including matches against the New Zealand All Blacks, the British and Irish Lions, Japan and South Africa. He represented NSW and was an Australian Wallaby triallist.

He was an accomplished martial artist, beginning training in 1946 and opening his own school at the Canberra Police Boys Club in 1955. By 1997 he was in the Australian martial arts hall of fame, the following year becoming a 10th dan black belt in judo and jujitsu.
