Hard day to pick a winner

Date

RACE OF THE DAY

MAL SECCULL HANDICAP

It's a hard, hard day to pick a winner, but we'll have a go, and our attention is in Melbourne for the Mal Seccull open handicap.

It looks to be a race in three, with former Adelaide runner Go The Knuckle favourite despite a poor run first-up in Melbourne.

First Command has to lug 60 kilograms around the 1000-metre journey, but with Glen Boss in the saddle he's a chance.

It's Crunch Time drops down in class after winning at listed level last start.

BET OF THE DAY

MERLIN MUSTANG

Merlin Mustang drops back to an open handicap in race five at Warwick Farm after producing a gutsy run in the group 2 Villiers Stakes last start when he finished 1½-lengths fifth behind Alma's Fury.

In a race record, Merlin Mustang did plenty of work at the front and boxed on proudly over the 1600m.

Here he will settle nicely once again from the inside gate and with just 52kg on top, he's a strong hope.

How to invest $20 on today's races

$10 WIN - Warwick Farm race 5, No. 8 Merlin Mustang

Despite the belief that Merlin Mustang is better suited to longer distances, the four-year-old has won twice over 1300m, so he has some natural speed.

Over 1400m at Warwick Farm on Saturday he's a big hope based on his performance in the Villiers.

With Samui Lad and River Of Salvation likely leaders, Merlin Mustang can get a lovely sit off the pace and salute.

$5 WIN - Caulfield race 3, No. 1 First Command

Might be carrying the topweight here but he will find this a lot easier than his recent runs, which include running five lengths behind Buffering in the group 2 Schillaci Stakes when first-up.

Seems to enjoy running second-up, placing four of six including a win at listed level last preparation.

Should enjoy the 1000m and will give this a show.

$5 WIN - Warwick Farm race 4, No. 10 Sessions

This looks to be as good a banker as we can ask for on Saturday with the 1000m likely to benefit the lightly raced Sessions.

He has struggled to settle in his races over longer distances but the jump-and-run nature of the sprint here should see him over the line.

Jumps from gate six and if he can get across he wins.
