Joe Hockey's workout video: Joe works it out!

Date
Joe Hockey works it out

Joe Hockey works it out Illustration: Rocco Fazzari

In a week that belonged to the Speaker of the Parliament, shadow treasurer Joe Hockey’s “entitlement” speech was destined to “Slipper” underneath the radar.
Delivered in a far-flung place, Joe’s words initially worked him into a corner, but now seem to have been lost and forgotten.
Just what did Joe mean? Yesterday's news, it seems, amounts to zilch.
Peter Slipper might have put the heat on Julia Gillard - but would it be fair to say he took the heat off Joe?
In this week's espresso video animation, we find Joe working it all out.

  • "...Joe's words initially worked him into a corner, but now seem to have been lost and forgotten." -- The only reason they are "lost and forgotten" is because it is the medias DESIRE to not harp on and carry on about his craziness. I can assure you that, had it been a member of the Gov, it would have been front page news for a fortnight, alternating every second day with Slipper. The pro right media determines what 'facts' (for use of a better word) the people get to learn. What a tragedy it is that we don't have a balanced, fair, UNBIASED news source any more.

      • Corporate entitlements are of course exempt from Joe's rant. Mining companies pay millions to the Liberal party and are thus entitled to pay billions less tax.

Although if you're a new mother who was earning $150K, the Liberal party's policy is that we all pay a 1.5% extra on everything we purchase to fund that woman receiving $75K/year whereas a woman on a low income of say $20K will get $10K from that great big baby tax on everyone. I'm not sure how that features in Joe's working out of entitlements..

It would be nice if the journalists held Abbott/Hockey to task a bit more when they criticise things like the flow on cost carbon price - and compare it to their promise of "direct action" which we'd all be paying for and their baby rort (which all >$5m businesses would be slugged with).

        • Mr Nathan, please don't omit to include our nanny's subsidies. One relies heavily on one's prudent fiscal management, and the nanny subsidy is a vital component of one's wealth, oh, uhm, rather, I mean, one's financial planning. One requires a nanny for each of the 4 young masters, and in current times, with the poor gorvernence of our nation, one simply cannot afford 4 nannies on the pitance of $4million per annum (tax exempt, of course). One has a lifestyle and appearance to uphold. Election now I tell you good fellows. We must have the wisdom of our brothers Abbott and Hockey ruling the nation, so that one can sleep easily on the matress stuffed with cash (a bit like the pheasant enjoyed at dinner... chuckle chuckle)

      • Rocco I am glad you did a video of Hocking in a gym and working out. It is something he desparately needs.

Hocking wants to cut welfare and Abbott wants to bring in more overseas workers. Job prospects do not sound good for the every day Aussie, or it that the Libs plan?

        • It must have taken a lot of imagination to paint a picture of Hockey in the gym Rocco, much easier to picture him in one of those races they have in America where the fastest eater wins. But Hockey's push to cut out entitlements (while he and his mates partake 'liberally'), and Abbotts push to import cheap labour, makes a mockery of the Libs promise that "Work Choices" is "dead, buried, and cremated". Believe me, voting for this rabble of rowdy ratbags, will be fraught with danger. The get their policies from the US Republicans playbook. Vote for them at your(and your childrens) peril.

        • I'm sure Abbott and employers would jump for joy if they could bring in thousands of workers on the 457 visa program. Might not be a bad idea for those industries who truly need workers, just a couple of questions.
Is the Coalition prepared to put in the money to seriously check the requirement for workers and that no Australians want the jobs.
Will they ensure that the current rorting of the system by employers and agencies is stopped (just listen to anecdotal evidence or look at the stories on the net)
Will they ensure that the imported workers can actually speak and understand English, otherwise you have an OHS issue.
Somehow I don't think that these issues and others will be important to the Coalition if they interfere with the big end of town.

      • Putting aside cuts from poor or rich of entitlements or more taxes to poor or rich for funding entitlements. The basic facts are the more entitlements you have the more tax you must pay. (Unless it is funded from debt in which case the more tax FUTURE taxpayers must pay or they will receive fewer entitlements). If more ongoing entitlements are promised than can be delivered by the tax base then it leads to an unsustainable position and so (the entitlements) are based on a false promise. What Joe was on about was that the entitlements must be sustainable and not be backed by using more and more debt or we get cornered like Europe where they had to slash and burn. However I like that extreme position that Rocco Hockey is purveying of zero entitlements very pro anarchy does that mean no police hospitals or education then!
