Meningococcal death on Darling Downs

Date

Kristian Silva

A person has died in the Darling Downs region from a suspected case of meningococcal disease.

The patient died in Warwick Hospital during the weekend after developing symptoms, Queensland Health said in a statement.

No further details about the case have been released by health authorities and the matter has been referred to the state coroner.

The Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service director Penny Hutchinson urged local residents not to be alarmed.

She said there had been no other suspected cases of the disease in the area recently.

“All of the people who have been in close contact with the most recent suspected case have been followed up with the appropriate treatment,” Dr Hutchinson said.

“Obviously this is a very distressing time for the family, and our heartfelt sympathy goes to them.”

Initial symptoms of meningococcal include red patches, fever, headache, nausea and vomiting.

The bacterial condition can cause a patient’s condition to deteriorate quickly, occasionally leading to death.
