RACE OF THE DAY
C.F. ORR STAKES
Top-class fields return on Saturday with the first group 1 of the year, the C.F. Orr Stakes at Caulfield.
Every race on the card apart from the first is at listed or group level, which means we're fast approaching autumn racing and the riches it brings.
The Orr will feature the return of Black Caviar's half-brother All Too Hard, and the boom colt will start favourite although he won't get it all his own way.
Despite having bottom weight thanks to the weight-for-age conditions, All Too Hard will meet unbeaten gelding Callanish as well as 10-time group 1-winning superstar King Mufhasa.
Throw in West Australian star Mr Moet and in-form sprinter Pinwheel and we've got a great race. I'm leaning towards All Too Hard. He's unbeaten in Victoria and will be rocketing home, but at close to even-money he's not a sound bet for mine.
A horse such as Mr Moet presents better value - he's fresh and has the ability to run over the top of them late. Worth an each-way bet at double-figure odds.
BET OF THE DAY
GOOD BA BA
This Hong Kong veteran is now with Rick Hore-Lacy at Caulfield and his first two runs in Australia have been OK, if not great.
Now an 11-year-old, it's fair to say he's past his prime - a career that has seen him win more than $9 million in prizemoney and seven group 1s - but this mile race at set weights is perfect for him.
He's won 11 races over the 1600 metres and, at his best would be very hard to beat in the Carlyon Cup.
LAY DOWN YOUR LOBSTER
$10 win Caulfield race 8, No.4 Good Ba Ba
Asked to carry just 56 kilograms here in a group 3 against inferior opposition. There is a question mark over whether he can remember what it's like to win - his last salute was back in December 2009, albeit in the group 1 Hong Kong Mile. Loves the distance, and will be rocketing home in the final furlong.
$5 win Warwick Farm race 4, No.12 Unimpeachable Gutsy three-year-old filly who took a little too long warming up on debut two starts back when hitting the line hard over the 1200 at Wyong. Backed that up with a steamrolling effort to run down her rivals at Kembla Grange over 1400. Pushes out to 1600 here and appears good value.
$5 win Caulfield race 6, No.2 Super Cool Had a blistering spring, winning The Vase at group 2 from boom three-year-old It's A Dundeel before a game second in the Victoria Derby. Returns today and from a good draw he could be in it for a long way.
