THE RATINGS RACE: Week 19

Date
A work in progress

A work in progress

To discuss how Australians hoard recorded TV shows, go to The Timeshifters' Waltz

Showing The Voice only once during the week caused Channel Nine to suffer a big drop in audience share, but it still won the week, while MasterChef gave Ten a giant boost. In the week ending May 12, the prime time audience shares went like this: Nine 18.4 per cent; Seven 17.4; all Pay TV 16.2; Ten 12.3; ABC1 10.2; SBS1 3.5; 7TWO 3.0; GO! 3.5; 7mate 2.2; Eleven 2.8; Gem 2.1; ONE 2.2; ABC2 1.9; ABCnews24 0.8; SBS2 0.7; ABC3 0.6.

If you want to know every detail of how Australians in each mainland capital watched AFL and NRL last Friday and Sunday, go to For the footy tragics.

No doubt you are wondering what kind of weird people are watching Celebrity Apprentice. Oddly, the answer is that it is most popular with male viewers aged 16-39. Wtf? Are they still hoping to see Charlotte Dawson nude?

Old haircut. The new one got fewer viewers.

Wednesday is becoming like Thursday -- a night when viewers watch their recordings rather than anything particular in first broadcast.  Randling and Celebrity Apprentice are proceeding down the plughole of history, while MasterChef simmers gently, topping the night with female viewers aged 16-39 (followed by Offspring).

Tuesday was supposed to be the night when we could test Australia's interest in MasterChef, clear of any enticements from The Voice. But The Budget got in the way. If we combine together every channel's Budget presentation, as we are entitled to do, we find that more Australians watched Wayne Swan than watched George, Garry and Matt. The chart suggests we now care more about weight loss than weight gain.

Oh dear oh dear. MasterChef made a modest but respectable return on Sunday, but dropped to below a million on Monday, a victim of The Block and The Voice. Ten pointed out in a press release that it won its Sunday timeslot with viewers aged 18-49,  scoring about the same opening numbers as My Kitchen Rules. But Monday's figures are a worry. Tonight, Nine has strangely chosen not to show The Voice, so Seven and Ten live in hope of a miracle recovery.

  • Does anyone really watch "Dancing with the Pensioner Sets"? beats the fluff outta me. And is it just me, or does Matt Preston look gayer with each series?

    • I watched 'MasterChef' on Sunday, and again last night but I'm not convinced. I'm fairly sure it will slide straight back into the same sugary (ie: false) mess it made of itself last year. The prospect of endless Competitions! and Challenges!! and Sob Stories!!! is a bit daunting. We'll see. It's very non-eventful for Event Television.

Happened to see several promos for 'Being Lara Bingle' on Sunday too. Which was a surprise because I thought that was going to be on Nine or Seven. So Ten are showing both 'Being Lara Bingle' AND 'The Shire'? Bonuses for everyone! It's an endless stream of IDEAS!!! over at Ten... Anyway, their selling point for BLB is "Get to know the REAL Lara Bingle"..... I would've thought "We promise, during this show about Lara Bingle, to show no footage or stills of Lara Bingle and to never speak her name aloud" might have been a better offer. It looks bloody awful. Stay tuned for a midyear catfight between 'Being Lara Bingle' and 'The Life of Brynn', where LittleBoobs and BigBoobs pull each others' hair extensions and screech and blubber and break their acrylic nails and no-one watches or cares.

      • Yes, Darren, Masterchef returns with a whimper and not a bang. Can already pretty much guess who makes it to the top 24. Their the one's getting the most air time already! Simply predictable.

And dear, network Ten, and the dimwits that pull the strings, no one gives a toss about Lara Bingle. Just another self promoting talentless bimbo. Ten has the BEST shows planned for the year don't they? Just winners!

      • Probably the girl they've been featuring in 'MasterChef' promos (the one who steps through the back of her pantry to find a wondrous magical land of giant cakes and a Gary with much less neck than usual) for the last 3 months is a fair bet to make it too....

And you're wrong about no-one giving a toss about Lara Bingle, Em. You forgot Lara Bingle.

Speaking of dimwits at Ten, I'm guessing Amanda Keller's new show, scheduled for 8pm on Friday night (aka: The Death Zone) is not going to go well. Plus Chris Brown is a VET. Not a backpacker. And that chef who can't speak AUSTRALIAN is way too enthusiastic.

        Sorry to shout...

    • Not sure what Ten were thinking by running MasterChef at 7pm. If people aren't still preparing or eating dinner, then the kids control the remote and are watching Home & Away.

        • Has anyone watched WAG Nation on Foxtel? It's indescribably horrible but well worth watching if you have enough alcohol in the house to make up a drinking game: a shot for every time Terry Biviano picks her hair away from her lipstick. The women have the IQs of fence posts. It's a warning to everyone that Botox will freeze grey matter along with muscle tissue.
