THE RATINGS RACE: Week 47, when Grimm and Once Upon A Time brought the magic back

Date
Good and evil, but both hot, in Once Upon a Time.

Good and evil, but both hot, in Once Upon a Time.

In the week ending November 24, the prime time audience shares went like this: Seven 20.4 per cent; Pay TV 16.3; Nine 15.3 per cent; ABC1 11.5; Ten 9.1; 7TWO 3.6; SBS1 3.6; GO! 3.4; 7mate 2.9; Eleven 2.6; Gem 2.7; ONE 12.0; ABC2 1.9; ABC3 0.8; ABCnews24 0.8; SBS2 0.7.

On Thursday, Once Upon A Time made a powerful return in a depressed ratings market, and the ABC doubled the audience of the sainted Annabel by shifting her from ABC2 to the mothership.

On Wednesday night ABC News beat Nine news and Today Tonight and A Current Affair. It makes you proud to be an Australian viewer.

On Tuesday, the Grimm got off to a strong start. And it gets better as the series progresses, as anyone who has Pay TV can tell you. So now Once Upon A Time and Grimm are on the same channel, which will hopefully not screw around with their timing during the silly season.

To stop Disney from messing around with Leia, Luke and Han, go to Star Wars VII. Look at the chart for Monday night -- Aunty is strong on news and current affairs. She might just end the year with a bigger audience than Channel Ten.

On Sunday, a slow, depressing Scandi-noir beat a Yank spy thriller, possibly because another Yank spy thriller, starring Angelina Jolie, was up against them both. Sunday night is a murder buff's dream-come-true -- unless they don't have a recording device, in which case it's a nightmare.

  • Well I got to see the latest Bond film on the weekend (Skyfall). I was a bit norty. Bond used to be about action, stunts, gadgets, babes, great locations, babes, stunning photography and babes. Somehow much of this was left out in favour of product placement. Still, it will impress the box office.

On another disappointing note .. 666 Park Avenue has been canned mid season which is a shame as it had potential. I can save on my downloads now. Channel 7 have plans to show this on even longer delay next year. What could possibly go wrong?

I record Wallander and I think it is a much better show than Homeland but still cannot see why Homeland has tanked this year. Perhaps Kenneth Branagh is more interesting than the fruit looper woman. I think so anyhow.

I see Channel Fail are sacking many of their newsreaders and Journos. Plus a shirtload of technical staff. That will give advertisers and viewers confidence in the network.

Seems we are coming to the TV Dead Zone soon so it is time for the boxsets and downloads over the break. Might even read a book or two.

    • Watched a bit of "Salt" last night because I missed the beginning of "Wallander" and I was the only one in the house keen on watching it anyhow. (It was recorded - sans intro - so I'll catch up later in the week, I hope.)

Really nothing on, isn't there? "Lizzie Bennett Diaries" still amusing me over on YouTube. And we did watch "Safety Not Guaranteed" on the weekend (a naughty downloaded copy) which was just my cup of tea. Far too many good movies on out there, not nearly enough time to watch them all at the cinema...

      • Been dying to get to the movies but it just doesn't seem to be happening at the moment.
        Maybe this weekend.

Loving this season of Dexter. I keep wondering where they are going with it and it just keep getting more interesting each week. I think the writers may be building up to next season which is supposed to be the last. Great show.

There isn't much on "normal" TV at the moment but I am keeping myself amused with Dexter, Homeland, Walking Dead, Supernatural, new eps of Misfits, old eps of Star Trek and Survivor Phillipines. In between that I have just re read The Passage and have started on The Twelve. So not missing "normal" TV very much at all.

Oh and I am also watching season 4 of Breaking Bad which I somehow missed when it was on TV. Now that is one engrossing show. I am totally addicted!

        • I wonder what flashes through the mind of a Channel Ten programmer when they get up in the morning and see those ratings? Probably: Let's fire another experienced journalist.
I would've thought 'Can of Worms' would rate through the roof now that they've got "Zee-Box" and mentioned in every promo for the last week (in between promos for 'The Project': Now with Zee-Box!!!).
I dunno about everyone else, but my perception of Channel Ten at the moment is that they're ruthless/clueless bastards. May be some image-work required there...

I spent the weekend watching season 5 of 'MadMen'. 1966: everyone's gettin' sexxy...and dead. Really good.

Em, 'The Twelve' is as reliably easy and formulaic as 'The Passage'. Enjoyable.

          • Hm, I thought there were some comments yesterday, but they all seem to have disappeared...

Anyway, gave up on TV last night and watched "Buffy", working my way through season 1 while baking cupcakes for Mr Bear's birthday. Mmm, cupcakes.

            • Wanted to record "Grimm", but apparently we're already recording two shows in that time slot, and the trailer did look pretty trashy anyhow. Regretting that decision round about now.

I think the TV was on last night, I was absorbed in a novel.

Hm, I wonder when I'm supposed to get around to watching what I'm recording anyhow...

              • tqd, I watched Grimm for awhile when it was on Foxtel but lost interest after awhile. Not sure why really, I guess there is just too much to watch sometimes (well, too much I record anyway) and I just forget about some shows unless I am really into them. Grimm just didn't get me in that much. Though I may go back to it now it's on Seven.

              • Watched our recording of The Walking Dead last night, WOW the tension of all the possibilities.
Also enjoying Survivor this season much more than last season, and the Amazing Race has been its usual goodness. Have grown to like Person of Interest as well. Waiting to see what Arrow is like. Mind you none of this is watched live due to an aversion of ads. Generally I like the Christmas period as lots of interesting shows make an appearance, wonder if we will see "I'm a celebrity get me out of here"?

                • I'm enjoying Walking Dead too. So much tension, so much going on. Really top show!

Also enjoying Surivior this season. Much better than the last. Interesting mix of old and new contestants and the new ones are not as boring as the last season when it was a total predictable yawn from beginning to end. Can't really work out who'll win this time yet and that makes it interesting.

And, nEd, I am also into Person of Interest now. It's quite good. I was just thinking the other day how it reminded me of something but I couldn't remember what. Then I was browsing in JB the other day and came across an old fav TV show of mine on DVD called "The Equaliser" which starred English actor Edward Woodward. And it suddenly struck me! Person of Interest is basically The Equaliser in the digital age. Very similar concept in many ways.
You have the ex CIA dude who helps people who are in trouble, that no one else wants to help. Same premise different eras. So everything old is new again. Or something.
