THE RATINGS RACE: Week 9, when 176,000 liked Josh Thomas

To learn how to make money from the reading habits of Australians, go to Our favourite books, mags and rags.

Josh Thomas wondered if his new show Please Like Me was too gay for ABC1. Perhaps it wasn't childish enough for ABC2, where it was beaten by Bananas in Pyjamas.

MKR created a new record on Wednesday. To see how it fits with other most watched programs of all time, go to The TV Australia Loved. But the show after it, a submarine politico-drama called Last Resort, lost 160,000 viewers on its opening week. Are viewers afraid to commit to continual cliffhangers because they expect Seven to cancel it without notice?

The split personality (dare we say hypocrisy?) of the US media is beautifully illustrated on the usually excellent Huffington Post website. If you click here, you will see a piece attacking sexism and homophobia, and next to it puff-tiles directing you to stories entitled "Jennifer Lawrence flashes major sideboob at Independent Spirit Awards" and  "Anne Hathaway's nipples steal the show on the Oscars red carpet". Huffpo is nothing if not diverse. Like this column.

On Monday, Seth McFarlane sang a song called "I Saw Your Boobs", but the scandal that preoccupied  the US media was the prominences in Anne Hathaway's dress. Half a million Australians sat through three hours of Oscars during daylight, while another half a million stuck with the repeat showing till after midnight. Presumably they were singing "I saw your nips".

Ten sacked its chief executive last Thursday, Russel Howcroft took over as acting boss, and on Sunday MasterChef: The Professionals went up 480,000 viewers, while Elementary beat Downton Abbey with viewers aged 18-49. Who needs a Murdoch-offcut from America if an Aussie adman can work this fast?

  • The only real change since the CEO was sacked at Ten, is Glee moving to Eleven Tuesdays 7.30pm and therefore The Office being dropped.

    • Masterchef was up 40k on last Sunday, Elementary down 30k and Graham Norton down 5k. Downtown Abbey skews towards older viewers so has never rated well with younger viewers and Elementary has beaten it there every week.

The interesting thing is that putting Castle after the top rating drama of the week hasn't been enough to save it from the Moonlight effect.

    • Recorded live telecast of Oscars yesterday and watched last night. Thought Seth McFarlane average but not great - a couple of funny things but overall meh... Generally the whole thing was very safe. Pleased Argo won - was one of the best films last year in my opinion. I had seen 7 of the 9 nominated best picture films so I feel I can say something.

Maybe Tina and Amy would be better hosts..

      • Can't be bothered with the Oscars. And I still haven't seen Argo. Somehow missed it when it was on so waiting for the DVD. As to the host, not much good from what I've heard. I don't know why they didn't stick to "our" Hugh. He was good, I thought. Or why don't they get Clooney? He'd make a classy host and the Oscars need a little class. But someone whose only fame is Family Guy? Who even knew who he was? I barely did. And I don't like Family Guy. The Simpsons for me!

Happy that Ang Lee got best director. I loved "The Life of Pi" . Brilliant film.

Didn't watch much on the telly last night. Recorded stuff and watched some other recorded stuff and had an early night. Didn't even watch QANDA as I usually do. Heard that Turnbull and Carr had a lively debate. Sorry I missed it. Turnbull is always entertaining on QANDA.
Why isn't he leader of the Libs again? Oh, that's right. He has a brain.

        • People still watch the Oscars? Extraordinary.

Good to see Revenge holding up well this year (it's down substantially in the US, thanks to ABC's idiotic decision to move it to Sunday nights where it's up against all kinds of sporting telecasts and special events. Idiots.)

          • Caught up with the fast tracked Amazing Race and Survivor. Whilst it is really good that they are fast tracking them but why oh why does GO screen Survivor in something less that SD on your HD channel. Whilst survivor must have a crack team of bum crack, nipple and nether region pixelators, the last two episodes of survivor have been so grainy the pixelators didn't have to do anything. Come on GO push that button that transmits HD content in HD.

Going to watch another episode of Last Resort, has some promise (even if cancelled) but would not call it Sci-Fi.

Anyone know what is happening to Person of Interest, has disappeared from the TV guide!

I'll be very surprised if a Favorite doesn't win. That Philip is a total nut job but he's sane compared to the Hantz nephew. I don't think I'd sleep knowing that guy was on the same island! Talk about a coconut!!!
