When you're in love with a beautiful woman

Men are weak on many things, but nothing steals our wits like the attention of a beautiful woman.

It drives our career choices, our behaviour and it oils our vanity.

Entire books, such as The Game, are given to the pursuit of the beautiful girl and just for her we'll dive in a front of a bullet.

She just has to swing her head to make us insane.

But what happens when you actually catch a beautiful woman?

What happens when the dream turns into reality and you're suddenly sharing your bed with one of those girls who are paid ten, twenty or thirty thousand dollars a day to appear bored in front of a camera or to waltz down a 10-metre catwalk in Milan?

I asked a just-turned 40-year-old who dates, and sometimes lives with, a 20-year-old Italian model about what it's like. His name I'll keep in the shade 'cause she ain't no ordinary model. How about we call him Leo.

Was there a difference in others’ behaviour when they went out together?

"Most of the time she dresses way, way down so it's not too noticeable," said Leo.

"But vamp it up just a bit, say, a tight dress and heels, or she's down the beach in a bikini and it's like people have forgotten where they are. Whole tables swing to have a squiz. Girls do it as often, but more of a critical, sizing-her-up gaze. The first look is at her and they look to see who is with her."

I asked him if it changes how his friends behave?

"It definitely seems to be a mark of social validation. Kinda like having a successful business. A tick of social approval. Except maybe not a tick of approval from 35-year-old single mums."

The conversation turned to the clichéd model tantrums.

"The problem with a girl like her is she's used to getting away with s...ty behaviour. For the past eight years of working as a model, she's gotten used to being feted, fawned upon, and paid for every move she make. Models live in a different reality to the rest of the world, you gotta try and educate them about what normal people do."

Interestingly when I asked if he's upped his game, appearance-wise, he told me he's headed in the opposite direction.

"Oddly, I reckon I care less about my own appearance now. Like to see how bad I can look to see if she'll hang around. Seriously - no shaving,  haircuts or training for six months, same old daggy clothes. Weird, huh? I cared more about my appearance when I was single."

Of course, the big question is, what is it like staring into the eyes of a beautiful girl every day and night. Does he feel like he has to pinch himself sometimes?

"Occasionally. Mostly you just become oblivious to it. And then there's a special kind of light, an outfit, an angle… and you just go … sweet Jesus.”
