Angelina Jolie has caused a stir on the red carpet, but this time it has nothing to do with thigh-high splits in dresses.

In New York for the premiere of Brad Pitt's new drama The Normal Heart, the actress appeared covered in patches of white powder.

There was a large patch on her left jaw, with other patches all over her face.

  • Uma Thurman is yet another victim of the dreaded wrong powder and flash photography combination in 2010 in New York City.
  • Tyra Banks usually gets it right, but this over the top makeup is so wrong.
  • Makeup malfunctions are not just for women: actor Jon Hamm wore a bit too much powder at this 2011 event.
  • Unfortunately for Miley Cyrus, her overly-powdered chin combined with a red lip makes her look a clown.
  • Ashley Judd forgot to blend her powder properly, while promoting her book in New York in 2011.
  • Angelina Jolie suffered a makeup malfunction at the "The Normal Heart" New York Screening on May 12.
  • Actress and singer Leighton Meester is wearing way too much of everything at the American Eagle Outfitters opening in 2009.
  • Nicole Kidman powdered her nose a little too literally at the New York premiere of "Nine" in New York City, in 2009.
  • Drew Barrymore has the worst powder problem at the 2003 premiere for Charlie's Angels 2 - it's even in her hair.

The actress also had the poorly blended powder on her chest with big streaks over her collarbones.

The couple walked the red carpet hand in hand, and seemed blissfully unaware of Jolie's make-up malfunction.

It is perfectly common for celebrities to pack on the make-up for a red carpet appearance because they know they will be photographed.

Unfortunately make-up that appears fine in ordinary lighting can look completely different under super bright camera flash – in photos of Jolie taken without the flash, the powder is invisible.

It is not the first time the 38-year-old actress has had a powder malfunction.

At a photocall in London for her latest movie Maleficent, Jolie was caught with white powder on her knee.

Jolie can now join the band of actresses and actors who have all made the same mistake and used too much powder.

Nicole Kidman had a similar mishap at the New York premiere for her movie Nine in 2009.

Like Jolie, her powder was not blended properly and stood out in the flash photography.

She had big patches under her eyes as well as on the tip of her nose.

Uma Thurman is another victim of poorly blended powder make-up, with patches on her nose and under her eyes as well as in her eyebrows.

However the worst powder fail on the red carpet goes to Drew Barrymore.

At the London premiere of Charlie's Angels in 2003 the actress looked like she was wearing a white mask, she was wearing so much powder.

It is hard to believe that it was not noticeable without the flash – she even had some in her hair.

Men have also had bad powder experiences – Mad Men star John Hamm appeared on a red carpet with powder on his nose in 2012.

Luckily for Jolie she has not just been turning heads for poor make-up application recently.

At the London photocall for Maleficent, the actress showcased a pair of custom Louboutins inspired by her wicked character.

The pointy white wedges had transparent panels along the sides and slits in the toe, but the real talking point was the heel itself.

Fashioned into the shape of her Maleficent horns, the points of the horns were tipped with ''blood'' droplets.

The shoes were clearly a hit with the actress because Jolie wore the same heels in black at the Paris photocall for her movie.

Christian Louboutin told the Daily Mail he enjoyed designing the interesting shoes.

''It's exciting to work with a film that has such a strong aesthetic and a character as great as Maleficent,'' the designer said.

''I've been under the charm and spell of Angelina and her character.''

The luxury shoe brand is reportedly creating versions of the shoe in red and gold, which should be released soon.
