Pilloried as schoolkids, teased as adults... could it be that, all along, gingers have been desired? Redheads have better sex lives, according to the Red and Nearly Ginger Association (RANGA), which claims to represent the nation's redheads. And word has it that on the gay scene, in Melbourne at least, gingers are very, very hot right now (''ginger'', by the way, is a homosexual reference in Cockney rhyming slang). Whatever their sexuality and regardless of their politics and the origin of their hue, the Lana Del Reys, Karen Gillans, Leighton Meesters and Rupert Grints of the world seem to be having quite a moment. It's their time to blush in modesty rather than in humiliation.

RANGA is so convinced of the desirability of redheads that it is this weekend launching the ''world's first publicly available DNA screen for red-hairedness'' in Melbourne at its annual SummerGINGE fundraiser for orang-utans. You may be able to produce one even if you aren't one. And why wouldn't you want to? ''Redheads are gorgeous,'' says one (dark-haired) man about town. ''Their skin, their smell - lovely. And you have to hunt them out - there's not many of them.''

Most beauty professionals admire or even envy redheads. ''They age so beautifully,'' says Melbourne colourist Jack Morton. ''They don't wrinkle because they've had to keep out of the sun all of their lives. And their hair fades naturally to a more subdued but equally gorgeous shade. It doesn't go grey like everyone else's. Some of the best hair I've seen has been red.''

And the colour combinations available at the salon are ''endless'', according to Nathan Armagnacq of Oscar Oscar. ''That's why it is important to get the right shade for the client. It needs a detailed consultation, taking into account skin tone and eye colour,'' he says. ''You wouldn't want to be doing it yourself at home.'' A colour-locking treatment is needed as red tends to fade quickly and colour-specific treatment products used when washing hair. Whether the hair is copper-toned, plum or brick red, colour renewal is needed every four to six weeks to maintain vibrancy. Says Armagnacq: ''Even the most gorgeous of natural red can benefit from being enhanced with a demi-permanent to give it more shine and to make it feel softer.''

He says despite the high maintenance, red is popular. Why wouldn't it be if it makes you stand out in a crowd and be highly desirable? Or are the redheads of RANGA deluding themselves? Is being a redhead really so wonderful? Whether you’re a former child ginger or a brazen bottle red, what's it like to be a redhead? If you've gone from red to another colour - or vice versa - how does it compare? And maybe, like the ALP is finding out, once you've turned ginger, there's no turning back.

  • ''Redheads are gorgeous,''

Only the female ones and usually not noticed until after maturity.

Well at least that has been the experience related to me by the few I know well.

    • Spot on. I never had a date till I left school. Guys definitely didn’t like redheads back when I was in my late teens. When I hit 23, suddenly I was fighting them off with a stick and it’s gotten worse (or better, I guess) the older I get. I’m in my 30’s now and it’s practically a fetish for some guys. I think it’s almost a way for men to show that they’re not like the typical guy going for the bleached blonde, tanned women that society keeps telling us is the epitome of beauty. I’ve never sunbaked and I wear sunscreen every day and I have to say, it’s true, you do age a lot better when you protect your skin from the sun.

    • I'd prefer a tanned hottie or an asian beauty over a readhead any day!

    • Couldn't agree with you less - Too many beautiful women out there to choose from. Redheads would be the last on my list.

  • I don't know what it is to be anything else. Even when I try to dye my hair another colour, the red takes over. Reading this, maybe I should be grateful for this! :) But, yep...I have to stay out of the sun, so even though I'm quite ancient I don't have any wrinkles to speak of and my hair fades but doesn't go really grey.

    • I'm the same. My brunette sister is four years younger and sprouting grey hairs and wrinkles. I have neither :)

    • Umm, just a questions for you, a self confessed red.

Toulouse Lautrec said "redheads smell of sex"- Do you think you smell that way?
I'm just curious because every red-headed woman I've ever known didn't smell like Toulouse said they did but they were indeed prone to outbursts of uncontrolled rage.

    • Interesting question, Alex! Funnily enough I've been told many times that I smell "nice", even though I'm not wearing perfume or anything with a particularly strong scent. I confess to having a bit of a "red-haired" temper....but I'm mellowing with age. :)

The latest scientific research postulates that the gene for redness, which is not present in the last 2 great out-of-africa diasporas is now viewed as being characteristic of the neaderthal branch of humanity.

Given that there was no credible reason for their "extinction" - their technology and their intelligence is considered superior to that of the later arrivals, then the theory of disappearance through being interbred with the newcomers would seem appealing. The fact that redness and light-coloured eyes are recessive would back this up.

So the point about them being more attractive could be true - most non-ranga men have always had a thing for ranga females.
