When the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, announced the federal election today, most would think the focus would have been on the September 14 date. But instead, murmurs were about her new glasses and hair colour, with Twitter commentators praising the look as "super stylish" and "hipster".
Personal stylist for Westfield, Donny Galella, believes the change was deliberate. "Is it coincidental that she gets new glasses the same day she calls an election? I don’t think so. Maybe she wants to be seen to look even more intelligent? I feel the shape of the glasses suits her face and the colourings suit her hair and complexion. They have a slight cat's eye shape which is the trend right now. I personally would have put her in a much lighter frame," he said.
‘‘I don’t feel her hair colour has changed. I find when you have red hair it can be challenging to always get the exact same shade every time,’’ he said.
Marketing expert Jane Caro said it would not be a news story if Tony Abbott got new glasses.
"Typical. We still can’t get past the fact that a woman’s first job is looking after her appearance. This reminds me of the fuss over Hillary Clinton wearing a scrunchie. It’s ridiculous."
"We feel we all have the right to comment on what a woman looks like and what she wears. It’s her business isn’t it? We can comment on her job because we pay her but we’re obsessed with her appearance. It’s what we do to women," she said.
"Her glasses are very conservative but I think that's smart. If she went for colourful ones there would be even more talk about it. I bet she's aware. And if her hair is a slightly different red, who cares? If it gives her a kick to colour her hair, that's great. Give the poor woman a little bit of pleasure," she said.
