3D art in Manuka
We've all heard, by now, of 3D printing, but think of the unlimited possibilities when it comes to art. Using the staircase as a recurring motif, Alex Lewis has a solo show of sculptures at Canberra Contemporary Art Space in Manuka. ''Stairs are a common architectural device but here they are turned on their head,'' says the gallery. ''These stairs do not deliver their intended function, instead turning in on themselves and repeating in unusual and unexpected ways. It has to be seen to be believed.'' The exhibition has works made using digital techniques - 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing and digital printing. So cool! Ascend Descend, by Alex Lewis, is showing at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, 19 Furneaux Street, Manuka, until April 27.

International quilts
Congratulations to local quilt artist Dianne Firth, whose work will be featured as part of an international exhibition in Canberra next month. As part of the Living Colour! exhibition, textile artists from around the world were invited to create a quilt inspired by a common theme, and only 32 were selected for display. Firth, a landscape architect and a quilter for the past 30 years, is the only artist from the ACT to have been selected, with her work Chlorophyll. The Living Colour! exhibition will show as part of the Creative Textile Show at the National Convention Centre from May 2-4.
Taking shape
If you have time en route to the coast this weekend, stop off at Bungendore Fine Art on Saturday morning to see Kiama artist Ken Tucker demonstrate his technique of applying acrylic to canvas. He'll be in the gallery from 11am, and you can watch his image grow from a blank canvas into the finished product. His exhibition, Home and Abroad, runs until the end of April, at Bungendore Fine Art, 42b Ellendon Street, Bungendore.
Drawing and music
Are you one of those people who needs to be listening to music before you can truly be inspired to write, draw, paint or create? Then head on over to the National Portrait Gallery tomorrow and listen to Matt Withers play the guitar while you draw. It's for all ages and abilities and all materials are provided. Drawn in is on at the National Portrait Gallery from 1pm-3pm tomorrow.
Glass miniatures
Who doesn't love a miniature in glass? Bilk Gallery's popular exhibition of all things small, elegant and fragile - in glass - is back, with works by five Australian and New Zealand glass artists. They have taken up the challenge of creating mini-versions of their own larger works especially for this exhibition. Can you fathom it? Jenni Kemarre Martiniello has remade her incredible woven fish trap, and there are also works by Evelyn Dunstan, Tevita Havea, Kirstie Rea and Ben Sewell. Glass Miniatures is showing at Bilk Gallery, Palmerston Lane, Manuka, until June 7.
Behind the Parly scenes
Even if you've lived in Canberra for some time, it's possible you've never been inside Parliament House, instead glimpsing the grassy, flag-topped hill as you whizz to the Triangle on your way to work. As part of the Canberra Heritage Festival, you can take a guided tour to learn how the building's impressive architecture is symbolic of our national identity. The tours, at 10.30am and 1.30pm this weekend, will take you to areas not ordinarily accessible to the public, like the Ministerial Wing, Mural Hall and a glimpse into the Prime Minister's courtyard. The Night Cafe in court
The soaring foyer of the High Court is not, perhaps, the most intimate of settings, although the acoustics are amazing, which is why the free Sunday Music Program is so inspired. But things are set to get super cosy there tomorrow, when the Latin/gypsy jazz duo The Night Cafe brings everyone into its warm and intimate embrace. Flutist and chanteuse Leila Gato and guitarist Michael Dalvean will present a mix of French cafe, Latin, Jazz Manouche and Romany melodies, from tango and salsa to chanson and gypsy swing. The Night Cafe perform a free concert tomorrow, 1pm at the High Court of Australia.
