Putting their best feet forward, William and Kate have swayed in Polynesian rhythm to the delight of the latest hosts on their South Pacific tour.

The royals were given a traditional Tuvalu welcome that saw them don grass skirts, headdresses and necklaces to perform a dance.

No strangers to giving it a go, the Duke and Duchess were all smiles as they shimmied, waved their arms and laughed with local ladies as they learnt the moves on their whirlwind visit to the tiny Pacific nation.

Batik beauty... This is nothing if not festive and somehow the sight of William in a cheery shirt and a cheesy grin is a delight. Kate's floral, clashy and exuberant dress is the exact thing for poolside cocktails. We could question the straplessness of the dress and the way it could have set Kate up for an accidental flesh flash (something she must be shy about after the palace's latest nude picture scandal). These tropical ensembles were worn at an evening reception in the Solomon Islands. Reports say Kate's batik frock, a gift from her hosts for the evening, comes from a Solomon Islands shop called Island Print. Click for more photos

Kate opts for casual glamour on Asia-Pacific tour

The Duchess of Cambridge was a picture of fresh and casual elegance during her Asia-Pacific tour with Prince William, says Claire Low. Photo: Getty Images

The outfit was a long way from some of Catherine's demure choices on the tour so far - though her Alice Temperley dress, a laid-back, floor-length, kaftan-esque number, suited the festive mood.

Not breaking her diplomatic smile, the Duchess appeared to have been presented with the gift of a locally-made fan, bedecked with colourful feathers and beads which appeared to spell 'Cathleen'. A charming error, if ever there was one.

William played a game of Te Ano with local men and the couple drank coconut water, sat in heart-shaped, palm-frond 'thrones' and met local school children.

Tuvalu is the last stop on the couple's whirlwind trip.

Tuvalu is the last stop on the couple's whirlwind trip.

The welcoming island is their last stop in the nine-day tour. The short trip has been eventful for the couple, not least their pursuit of legal proceedings against the publishers behind a set of images showing Catherine sunbathing topless while on holiday in France.

A French court yesterday banned Closer magazine from any further publication or resale of the incendiary pictures of Prince William's wife.

Meanwhile, her outfit choices from Singapore to the Solomon Islands have set tongues wagging as to the possibility of a royal pregnancy.

  • If Kate really wanted to respect the traditions of Tuvalu, she should have gone topless!
