Antonia Kidman has given birth to her sixth child, Alexander, at the age of 42.

Overshadowed by the announcement of another baby - or feotus - as it may have been, Australia has celebrity baby news of its own.

Antonia Kidman, 42, has given birth to a baby boy after going into labour three weeks early.

Alexander Norman Kidman Marran was born on Monday morning in Sydney while father Craig Marran, 44, was at the couple's home in Singapore.

The birth - details of which are being held for a WHO magazine exclusive this Friday - is Kidman's sixth, giving siblings Lucia, 13, Hamish, 11, James, 9 and Sybella, 5, from her first marriage to Angus Hawley, and Nicholas, 22 months, from her current relationship, a new baby brother.

"It is with great delight Craig and I are thrilled to advise that Alexander Norman Kidman Marran arrived safely in the early morning of the 3rd of December weighing a healthy 3kg", Kidman said in a statement.

"Alexander caught us by surprise arriving earlier than anticipated with Craig and Sybella jumping on a flight from Singapore and arriving this morning.'

It is undertsood the self-confessed one-time "worker bee" has opened up to WHO magazine about "rationalising" having six children, saying if she was still a career woman in Sydney, she "just couldn’t do that."

The family is now looking forward to spending Christmas together, the couple said. "Alexander’s brothers and sisters are all excited ... We want to thank everyone for their kind wishes at this special time in our lives."
