Held at The Star, the AACTA Awards luncheon and ceremony honours the movie and TV industry's quieter achievers in the technical and creative fields before the real show ponies come out to play at a performer-heavy evening shebang two days later. The luncheon wasn't short on Hollywood heavy ammo, though, in the form of Jacki Weaver, Geoffrey Rush and Rachel Ward.

David Jones paraded its 2014 Autumn/Winter Collections among real trees in an enchanted forest created on the seventh floor of its Elizabeth Street store. Models, led by DJs ambassador Jessica Gomes, emerged through a giant wardrobe and paraded the threads to an audience where everyone was someone.

With its new line-up, the Southern Cross Austereo Launch 2014 was always going to be a lively party. Held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Rocks, the crowd was packed with professional entertainers from radio, TV and digital media. The banter ran from start to finish, provided by chat-happy characters from radio, including Triple M's new drive show presenters Matt Tilley and Joe Hildebrand, as well as The Today Network's Hamish Blake, Andy Lee, Sophie Monk, Jules Lund and Merrick Watts.

Jonah's 85th birthday party. To celebrate 85 years of gracious living, grand dame Jonah's rolled out the opulence, with a bash that began in daylight and ended after dark. Nowhere else in Sydney can claim quite as star-studded a history as this Whale Beach clifftop retreat.

Harper's Bazaar and Westpac Chinese edition launch was held at the Burberry store on George Street, in the CBD. Chinese New Year is an auspicious time for launches and Harper's Bazaar seized the moment by throwing a refined bash to launch their second annual Chinese edition. The 130 guests, many clad in Burberry, included Sydney girl and Aussie-Chinese actress Grace Huang, who starred with Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu in The Man with the Iron Fists and is shooting a new movie, Infini, with Luke Hemsworth in Sydney.

On Thursday evening, before the stars came out, the Royal Botanic Gardens transformed into the Royal Botanic Runway featuring the work of world renowned Australian designers Akira Isogawa, Aurelio Costarella, Collette Dinnigan and Martin Grant. Guilfoyle's Volcano seemed to almost hold its breath as more than 60 local and international models walked the runway like dreamy, otherworldly apparitions.

On Thursday night, Southern Cross Austereo lined 'em up. The talent, for 2014; it was the SCA line-up launch and we were at Encore at the St Kilda Sea Baths. Fifi Box and Dave Thornton, Maz Compton and Dan Debuf, Dan Anstey and more were there. Justice Crew performed as well.

It was 40 degrees and the air smelled of meat. A drum beat, loud and insistent, called us closer as samba dancers, almost-dressed in feathers and sequins and sweat, moved their hips, their waists, in rapturous rhythm. When you closed your eyes it was Rio; when you opened them it was Tuesday night in High Street,Prahran, and it was the launch of Viva Brazil – churrascaria-style dining determined to be true to the traditional cooking methods, and spirit, of Brazil.
