Colin Farrell has revealed that he wanted to be Elizabeth Taylor's eighth husband. In a candid interview with Ellen Degeneres, the 37-year-old star spoke of his "romance" with the 79-year-old actress shortly before she died in 2011.
"It was kind of like the last ... kind of romantic relationship I had, which was never consummated," said Farrell.
He met the actress after a chance encounter with her manager at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai hospital. Farrell was there for the birth of his second son, Henry. Taylor was there having an operation.
"My youngest son was being born," said the actor, whose other son James, aged 10, has intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"We were in Cedars ... it was about an hour before Henry arrived - and I bumped into somebody outside the lift. It was Elizabeth's manager and her close friend Tim Mendelsohn and they said, 'What are you doing here?'
"I said, 'My son's about to be born ... What are you doing here?' And they said, 'Well, Elizabeth's having a stent put in her heart. It's no big deal, because she had so much sh--'. I said, 'Will you tell her I said hello? She probably won't know who I am."'
When the manager told Farrell she did know who he was, the actor, who is now starring in Saving Mr Banks, was chuffed.
A week later, the twice-married star, whose children are from different partners, decided to send Taylor a bunch of flowers to wish her well.
He phoned his publicist to arrange the delivery. "And my publicist said, 'That's funny because I'm looking at an orchid from Elizabeth Taylor for you.' I said, 'Wow, that's amazing.'
"I said, 'Well send that bad boy over to the house."
He sent Taylor flowers and then took the exchange a step further.
"I then, cheekily, about a week later, said, 'Listen is there any chance I can go ... and see her?'" Farrell said.
"That was the beginning of a year and a half or two years of what was a really cool [relationship]."
Farrell, who has reportedly dated Demi Moore, 51, as well as Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie and Lindsay Lohan, would phone Taylor for chats when neither of them could sleep.
"She wasn't much of a sleeper at night like I'm not, so at two o'clock in the morning I'd call her," he revealed.
"I'd call her at two in the morning and the nurse would answer the phone. I'd say, 'Is she awake?'
"The nurse was like, 'Hold on, I'll just check', and then I'd be on the phone and I'd hear, 'Hello?'
"I would go, 'How's it going?' and we'd talk for a half an hour, an hour into the wee hours. Really cool."
The single actor also revealed that he wanted to marry Taylor, whom he calls a "spectacular, spectacular woman".
"I just adored her," said Farrell, who read a poem at her funeral.
"I wanted to be number eight but we ran out of road."
