New York-based Australian jewellery designer Samantha Wills has come a long way since starting her business at a stall at the Bondi Markets at the age of 21. Now Wills is a global brand and her designs are worn by superstars such as Kate Bosworth, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez. Kate Waterhouse caught up with the 30-year-old to chat about her success.

How is it all going in NY?

It's a pretty crazy lifestyle with lots of travel. The schedule this year is six weeks in NY and two weeks in Australia throughout the entire year, and a few countries in between.

You're killing it over there!

Yes, it's going really well. We got that placement in The New York Times [last November] and since then it has generally just opened so many doors and kick-started so many relationships, so it's going good.

Did you ever think you would be as big as you are now?

When I started, it wasn't even like I went out to be a jewellery designer. It was genuinely a hobby that I did on the side; it was never a business interest. When we launched at Australian Fashion Week it just took off in a way that I had no choice but to make it a business. It was so overwhelming and I was like, ''Well, I guess I'm a jewellery designer now.''

What else would you have done?

I actually wanted to be a dolphin trainer but I was so rubbish at science and never passed marine biology so it was never an option. I was spending all my spare time designing and it kind of consumed me so it was such a seamless transition to have it as a job.

Do you wear only your own jewellery?

I do because no one gives me jewellery as gifts!

Biggest career highlight so far?

The Sex and the City 2 placement was pretty big for us, so that was pretty exciting in the sense that nothing before or after SATC has been such a powerhouse for a fashion brand to be affiliated with.

Who is your favourite celebrity to have worn your pieces?

Well, Eva Mendes has been our most successful celebrity. She wore a ring a few years ago and it's still our best-selling style today.

Because she wore it or is it a classic style?

I think it's a mixture of both. We have so much celebrity placement and you can never be sure. It's got to be the factors of the right celebrity, a great shot, right product at the right time of year. There are so many elements that go into a commercially successful shot.

How did she come to the brand?

Our PR company presented to her stylist, who was Rachel Zoe at the time, so it was great to have Rachel see it and have Eva wear it. It was tick, tick for us. Kate Hudson was another celeb who we just gave a few pieces to because she just loved them and all the shots we have had of her are just paparazzi, not red carpet, and she has no make-up on, her hair is everywhere, and that has moved product.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I genuinely don't know. I always think I will come back to Australia to settle down, whatever that means! Business-wise, I'd like to think we have a global brand that is more a lifestyle brand and not just a jewellery brand.

WE WENT TO The Winery, Surry Hills.

WE ATE A cheese platter.

WE DRANK Laurent-Perrier champagne.
