Connor Cruise has hit back at claims he is not close to his adoptive mum Nicole Kidman.
“I don't care what people say, I know that me and mum are solid,” Cruise told Women's Day in an interview from the Gold Coast last week. “I'll always love my mum”.
The 19-year-old added: “I love her a lot. My family means everything ...
“I love my music, but the family comes before everything else.”
Cruise was visiting Australia, which he calls his “second home”, on a brief DJ tour for the Good Life festivals.
He was adopted by Kidman and Tom Cruise in 1995. Cruise and Kidman, who married in 1990, also adopted daughter Isabella in 1993.
When the star couple divorced in 2001 both children decided to live with their father.
“I'd love them to live with us, but what can you do?” Kidman told Hello! magazine in 2010.
In a separate interview, Kidman also revealed her children had stopped calling her "mum". This intensified rumours that Kidman and her adopted children were all but estranged, apparently as a result of her Cruise's ties to the Church of Scientology.
Both children have now publicly defended their relationship with their mother.
In 2012 Isabella spoke with New Idea.
“I love mum. She's my mum. She's great,” Isabella, who is an artist, said.
“I see her sometimes and I speak to her. We're a very close family. I love all of our family.”
Isabella and Connor both live in Los Angeles, a city that Kidman says she rarely visits.
Instead, Kidman, her husband Keith Urban and their two daughters Sunday Rose, 5, and Faith Margaret, 3, divide their time between Sydney and Nashville, Tennessee.
In an interview with Vanity Fair last year, the 46-year-old said her marriage to Keith Urban, who she wed in 2006, was “very, very peaceful”.
This is a far cry from the “intoxicating” life she led with Cruise.
Kidman married Cruise in 1990 when she was just 23, and was catapulted into the spotlight alongside the Top Gun megastar. She recently told DuJour that she “would have gone to the ends of the earth for him”, but looking back, “I was so impulsive and naïve”.
Kidman also said her divorce from Cruise after more than 10 years of marriage was a shock, admitting “it took me a very long time to heal”.
Now, she says she is in a positive place where she is trying to find the balance between family and work.
“I'm passionate, so I want to be able to give completely to both, and that doesn't work always,” she told Vanity Fair. “My husband and I are in uncharted territory because we're trying to find artistic expression but also we're incredibly connected as a family - we're very, very tight, very, very close, and I have a very, very primal protection of my family.”
