Jason Donovan has revealed intimate details of his former relationship with fellow Australian star Kylie Minogue.
More than two decades after his on-screen romance with Minogue in Neighbours, Donovan, 43, has told a British TV journalist the now-pop princess was his first love and that he struggled as her success grew.
"At the time it was great," the actor, singer and radio presenter said of the relationship, as reported in Britain's Sunday Mirror.
"We cemented it in a Sydney Travelodge (hotel). There were a number of promotional trips we would do each weekend and the Travelodge was the place.
"I did not lose my virginity to her, though. I knew I was in love with her when she became successful on her own. It was a jealousy thing."
Donovan and Minogue, who played much-loved, sandy-haired Scott and Charlene in the Ramsey Street soap, remain good friends, he said.
But asked if, at the time, he wanted to replicate their on-screen marriage in real life, Donovan said he might have taken the next step.
"Probably, yeah, probably I wanted that at the time," he said.
"I guess it is hard for a young man as you think you are the success story and the breadwinner, but then suddenly she is off on a different course.
"We did live together for a while and there was a lot of chemistry between us. This was the first time I had truly been in love with someone.
"That is a very powerful emotion to have, coupled with the fact you are one of the most successful and talked-about couples in Australia, which was our backyard at the time.
"We argued a lot about her wanting to go off and do other things."
When Minogue left Donovan and started seeing INXS frontman Michael Hutchence in 1992, he said he "took it hard".
Also during the interview, Donovan - now a father of three with wife Angela - spoke of his former cocaine addiction.
"I took about three grams a day, maybe more. That's 20 to 30 lines. That's a proper addiction."
He also admitted that on at least one occasion he was under the influence of cannabis while on set filming Neighbours.
The full interview with Donovan is due to be screened in Britain later this year.
