Court no-show: Jodhi Meares. Photo: Sasha Woolley
Fashion designer Jodhi Meares did not show up to court on Tuesday following an alleged drunken crash where she ploughed into three parked cars in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
The ex-wife of billionaire James Packer was seen climbing out of the passenger window of her Range Rover after it rolled as a result of the crash on one of Bellevue Hill's most exclusive streets in late June.
Despite the no-show, her lawyer Chris Murphy indicated his client would plead guilty when the matter was again brought before Waverley Local Court on August 20.
Jodhi Meares allegedly crashed her Range Rover into three parked cars.
"It will be a plea and a very shot matter," he said.
He asked the court for an adjournment so that Meares' Range Rover could be properly examined by an "accident investigation service".
Police allege the 43-year-old's licence was already suspended and she was more than three times over the blood alcohol limit at the time of the crash.
But her legal team said police had mistakenly charged her with two counts of driving while suspended.
Several witnesses said the former model wandered around O'Sullivan dazed and confused just after the accident in June.
It is understood Meares had drunk several glasses of wine at hip North Bondi eatery, The Hill, in the hours prior.
Rose Bay police arrested Meares and took her back to Waverley Police Station where she allegedly returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.181.
Meares was charged with high-range drink-driving and driving while suspended.
Court records show she was driving on a suspended licence because she failed to pay a routine traffic fine.
It's understood police will drop the two driving while suspended charges on the next occasion.
A resident of O'Sullivan Road, who did not want to be named, said at the time she called the fire brigade and ambulance just after 9.30pm on Saturday after hearing "an almighty bang" and going out on her balcony to see a car on its side in the middle of the road.
Three other cars were damaged and debris was strewn across the road, the witness said.
She didn't recognise the female driver who miraculously wandered from the wreckage uninjured.
"I saw her, she was a little bit confused, she was walking around the place and the police told her to stay there because she was arrested."
The witness said that it was a miracle Meares didn't die in the crash.
"It was carnage, the car had flipped and there was a lot of damage. She's lucky she didn't get killed."
A NSW Police spokesman said the Range Rover was travelling north on O'Sullivan Road about 9.35pm when it crashed into three vehicles that were parked in the street.
He said the woman driving the Range Rover was not injured, however her vehicle and two of the parked cars were so badly damaged they needed to be towed from the scene.
Meares and her long-time fiance, former Noiseworks and INXS frontman Jon Stevens, were due to tie the knot in September, with the couple reportedly planning a "spectacular" wedding.
The incident has thrown into disarray the designer's wedding plans now she faces the very real prospect of a jail sentence.
Meares and her ex-husband James Packer have remained firm friends since their separation.
She expects to face court on August 20.
