Jodhi Meares charged with drink-driving after Bellevue Hill crash

Jodhi Meares, the fashion designer and ex-wife of billionaire James Packer, is facing a possible 18-month jail sentence after being charged with high-range drink-driving following a weekend crash in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

Witnesses said the former model was wandering around dazed and confused and was lucky to be alive after allegedly crashing her Range Rover into three cars and rolling it on to its side in Bellevue Hill on Saturday night.

Police allege the 43-year-old's licence was already suspended and she was more than three times over the blood alcohol limit at the time.

Meares was driving on a suspended licence because she failed to pay a routine traffic fine, court records reveal.

A resident of O'Sullivan Road, who did not want to be named, said she heard "an almighty bang" and saw a car on its side in the middle of the road.

Three other cars were damaged and debris was strewn across the road, the witness said. She didn't recognise the female driver who miraculously wandered from the wreckage uninjured.

"I saw her, she was a little bit confused, she was walking around the place and the police told her to stay there because she was arrested," she said. "She was very dazed."

The witness said that it was a miracle Meares didn't die in the crash.

"It was carnage, the car had flipped and there was a lot of damage. She's lucky she didn't get killed."

Another witness offered Meares a cup of tea, which she politely declined.

A NSW Police spokesman said two of the parked cars were so badly damaged they needed to be towed from the scene.

Officers from the Rose Bay Local Area Command gave Meares a roadside breath test, which allegedly returned a positive reading.

She was arrested and taken to Waverley police station, where she allegedly returned a reading of .181.

Meares was charged with high-range drink-driving, which carries a maximum 18-month imprisonment term, and driving while suspended.

Meares and her long-time fiance, former Noiseworks and INXS frontman Jon Stevens, were due to tie the knot in September, with the couple reportedly planning a "spectacular" wedding.

The incident has thrown into disarray the designer's plans to marry in September now she faces the very real prospect of a jail sentence.

However, it was not expected to be quite as grand as her first marriage to Packer back in 1999, a $10 million affair which saw Elton John flown to Sydney to perform for the 500 guests who attended the glittering spectacle at the Packers' eastern suburbs compound, not far from where the former bikini model crashed her Range Rover on Saturday.

While her marriage to Packer was over in two years, Meares has remained tight-lipped on the matter, only opening up recently when she participated in an Australian Story piece on her late father-in-law Kerry Packer in which she disclosed intimate details of life inside the powerful Packer clan.

Meares and her ex-husband have remained firm friends since their separation.

She has been issued a Field Court Attendance Notice to attend Waverley Local Court on August 5.
