Five years after they broke up, swimming star Lisa Curry has opened up about her divorce to fellow athlete Grant Kenny.
Considered Australia's golden couple for many years, Curry reveals it was a different story behind closed doors.
''I was being an absolute bitch, a cow, angry and irritable for no reason,'' she said in a new interview with A Current Affair.
''He [Kenny] wasn't actually doing anything wrong, I just couldn't control it. It created a lot of tension for us for a lot of years.''
Originally misdiagnosed with depression, Curry, 52, attributes her moods to Rushing Women's Syndrome.
While Rushing Women’s Syndrome is not a recognised medical condition, Curry believes that a hormone imbalance exacerbated by stress/diet/lifestyle is what caused her temperaments.
''I had days where I felt completely out of control,'' she revealed. ''I was moody, I would cry for no reason, I wanted to kill the world.''
Rushing Women’s syndrome is described by Dr Libby Weaver as ''the biochemical dance produced by chronic stress, along with its emotional and physical impact''.
''We're tired, but wired,'' she says.
This can make people depressed, overweight and in some cases infertile.
Curry was given the option of anti-depressants but she said that she knew she wasn’t depressed. Instead, seeking the advice of a naturopath, the golden girl keeps her hormones in balance with a ''happy hormone supplement'' added to her morning smoothie.
Building her profile as an ambassador for healthy living, Curry believes the reason she had a swimming career was to be able to help other women change their bad lifestyle habits.
''Millions and millions of ladies are going through this around the world,'' she said. ''It's become such a big problem that the women think it's normal.''
The health and fitness coach is visiting regional and rural towns with her One Life, One Chance Aussie Road Trip to help locals tackle obesity.
Curry married Kenny in 1986 and had an amicable split in 2009. The couple had three children together, Jaimi, Jett and Morgan.
Kenny has since moved on and is reportedly dating TV personality Fifi Box.
Although neither has officially confirmed the news, the pair are said to have a daughter, Trixie Belle, together.
