Samantha Armytage replaced as host of UNHCR lunch with Kristin Davis

Sunrise personality Samantha Armytage has been replaced as the host of a fundraising lunch honouring refugee women with US actress and UNHCR ambassador Kristin Davis, a day after the pair participated in an awkward Sex and the City skit on Channel Seven's breakfast television show.

Armytage was due to MC the $200-a-head lunch, organised for Australia for UNHCR, which kicked off at midday on Friday in The Ivy Ballroom in Sydney. During the event, Armytage was due to hold a question-and-answer session with Davis about her work with refugee women.

But Armytage and her co-host David Koch revealed on Sunrise on Friday morning that Armytage would no longer attend the event.

"I was asked to MC [an] event and conduct a Q and A with Kristin on stage and I immediately accepted," Armytage said.

Koch continued: "Since our interview yesterday, organisers have asked Sam not to host the event now or to attend it at all, which was unexpected."

Armytage said she "always was, and I still am, very happy to host this fundraiser for such an important cause".

The pair also said they had the "utmost respect" for Davis and the UNHCR, and wished them luck.

"It was meant to be a bit of fun," Koch said.

A spokeswoman for UNHCR told Guardian Australia on Friday morning that the lunch would now be hosted by Australia for UNHCR director Naomi Steer instead.

"I can confirm that Sam Armytage will not be hosting the lunch today," she told Guardian Australia, but did not give any explanation for the change.

Fairfax Media has contacted Australia for UNHCR for comment.

The change appeared to have been made at the last minute, with Armytage still appearing on Australia for UNHCR advertising for the lunch. Armytage herself retweeted a link to a website where people could buy tickets to the event on Thursday.

The change comes a day after Davis appeared on Sunrise and was asked to reprise her role as her Sex and the City character Charlotte York in a bizarre skit.

"You guys have seriously lost your mind," Davis said as Armytage, taking on the role of Carrie, pulled on a blonde curly wig. The duo were joined by fellow Sunrise stars Edwina Bartholomew, as Samantha, and Natalie Barr in a red wig as Miranda.

"Sarah Jessica [Parker, the original Carrie Bradshaw] is not going to be happy about this," Davis said.

The scene focused on Carrie being broken up with by Post-It note.

Later, Davis retweeted a fan who wrote: "That was the worst piece of TV I've ever seen. Kristin, you and your charity work is great. Shame Sunrise."

Davis also sent a wink emoji to rival Today breakfast host Lisa Wilkinson, after the Channel Nine personality tweeted the star.
