The likelihood that the ER star will make the leap from the red carpet to the White House has doubled since he married human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, according to bookmakers.

British betting house William Hill originally had 200-to-one odds on the actor becoming the next US President. However, following the couple's star-studded nuptials in Venice, those odds have now shortened to 100-to-one.

"Originally we did it as fun around the wedding but people took it seriously, so we had to change the price," William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said.

"We could get up to a six-figure sum in the next week. The UK public doesn't believe the US would vote a single man into the White House and Clooney now has the whole package. He's a genuine contender.

"George Clooney is not just one of the most recognisable faces in the US, but in the world, and if he did decide to run for President he ticks a lot of boxes."

Some conspiracy theorists are also pedalling the agenda suggesting he has now found his perfect First Lady in Alamuddin. The barrister, who specialises in international law, has been appointed to a number of UN commissions including the latest inquiry for Gaza, a role which she declined due to a burgeoning case load. She was also an adviser to Kofi Annan during the Syrian peace process in 2012.

Clooney is also passionate about human rights and was arrested for protesting against Sudan in 2012. He has previously dismissed suggestions he is gearing up for a life in politics but that was two years before meeting Alamuddin.

"As for me running for President, look, there's a guy in office who is smarter than anybody you know, and nicer, and he's having an almost impossible time governing," he said at the 2011 Venice Film Festival.

"Why would anyone volunteer for that job? I have a very good job. So I have no interest."

Not surprisingly, US political experts and international relations specialists have dismissed claims that Clooney will stop spruiking percolated drinks in favour of becoming POTUS.

"It's always possible he'll go into politics, but not, I would have thought, at this level," LaTrobe University's Professor Dennis Altman said.

"I think it is a beat up. He may well enter politics via a bid for Governor or Senator in California in 2016 were Barbara Boxer [Democratic Senator for California] to decide to retire."

Coincidently, during the three-day Clooney wedding celebrations, Bill and Hillary Clinton became grandparents. The power couple staged a large scale hospital check-out photo opportunity with their daughter Chelsea, something not seen since Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge introduced Prince George to the world in 2013.
