YOU HAD to feel a little sorry for the other nominees at last night's glam InStyle magazine Women of Style Awards in Redfern.

Arriving in a fleet of limos and dressed in their designer finery with immaculate hair and sparkling jewels, they all looked like winners.

But there was an undeniable air of defeat hanging about some of the ladies after word spread that one of the nominees, international supermodel and celebrity mother Miranda Kerr, was in town especially for the awards and was about to hit the red carpet.

From that point on it was pretty clear who the evening's big winner would be. And so it was Kerr, dressed in a Carla Zampatti gown, who took out not just the ''beauty'' category (an award she tied for) for her range of skin care potions, but also the big gong of the night, voted Australia's Most Stylish Woman by readers. She arrived bathed in flashbulbs, adorning herself with two very stylish accessories: her mother Therese and grandmother Anne.

The awards recognise ''the achievements of outstanding Australian women who have the innovation and commitment to exceed in their field of expertise''.

Asher Keddie won the hotly contested News and Entertainment category, beating contenders Rose Byrne and Natalie Imbruglia. Nikki Gemmell and Lally Katz tied in the Arts and Culture category and Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson (Easton Pearson) won in Fashion.

One of the bigger upsets of the night was Indira Naidoo taking out the Lifestyle category for her balcony vegetable patch, trumping Australia's millionaire kitchen queen Donna Hay.
