Last week the 32-year-old expectant mother made her first public appearance since announcing her second pregnancy and her style has been touted as edgy, adventurous, fashion forward and even rebellious by fashion commentators around the world.
"A rebellious Kate Middleton displayed her knees," New York Magazine decreed when the Duchess attended the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards at the National History Museum in London wearing a sky blue Jenny Packham gown which featured a mini hemline with robe-like overlay.
She then shocked the style set by once again exposing her knees with a black shift dress that featured sheer panels. It was also one of the first times the royal has dabbled in on-trend dressing.
"Kate Middleton continued her streak of minor sartorial rebellions and wore a dress with cutouts. Middleton's openness to experimenting with almost trendy dressing is endearing," another article read.
The dress in question was a creation by one of her favourite local designers, Temperley London, which bore a close resemblance to the ivory broderie anglaise day dress she wore to Manly Beach and Wimbledon by Australian label Zimmermann.
The long-sleeved Temperley gown turned heads for its see-through sections which showed her flesh-coloured slip and parts of her arms.
She wore the black gown to the Action on Addiction Gala - her second night-time engagement since confirming Prince George's younger sibling was due in April 2015.
Earlier this year, prior to the New Zealand and Australian royal tour, the Queen reportedly ordered a royal make-over of the Duchess' style, which, prior to her marriage to Prince William in 2011, regularly showcased her enviable legs and the best of the affordable clothing seen sold on the high-street.
During the tour she wore a selection of demure yet couture day dresses by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, Catherine Walker, Erdem and Roksanda Ilincic. All 24 of her official outfits, that featured decided lowered hemlines than previous ensembles, were allegedly chosen by the Queen's personal dresser Angela Kelly.
