"Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's spring exhibition housed by its Costume Institute. Every year Vogue editor and the Institute's co-chair Anna Wintour hosts the annual gala to mark the opening of the showcase.

Celebrities, fashion designers, politicians and high society walk the Met's famous steps on the first Monday in May in their Sunday best as a part of the exclusive fete. Only 650 people are invited and pay about $25,000 per ticket. Last year Wintour, who tightly controls the guest list, decor and entertainment for the evening, raised more than $12.5 million for the museum.

Over the years the Met Gala has been viewed as a collision of art and culture with designers each dressing a "muse" for the function.

However this year, save for a few exceptions, the party could be mistaken for being named "Manus x Mediocrity" with the amount of safe, sanitised outfits storming the steps. While the event has traditionally been viewed by and targeted towards females, the male guests (almost) outshone the fairer sex this year thanks to rocking everything from ripped jeans to metallic armour.

She's the co-chair of this event which is all about tech in fashion and Swift came looking like a dehydrated Louis Vuitton lizard.

Queen Bey's latex number by Givenchy was inspired by the tablecloth from last Christmas - and still covered in grandma's trifle.

It wouldn't be a ball without Madge's breasts and butt and thankfully her ensemble by Givenchy artistic director Riccardo Tisci didn't disappoint. A highlight was her homage to fashion's greatest technological advancement - the g-string.

Looking like a prison guard in fancy dress, she reportedly had to wear a nappy under her billowing Prada creation. She pre-empted those at her table by telling reporters, "I'm wearing a really large thing, which will be very difficult to use the restroom in, I might just wear a diaper. I don't really care." A small price to pay for arriving like she just crawled out of the that rabbit hole Alice in Wonderland fell down thanks to her black beehive, gothic make-up and metres of emerald, navy and black fabric adorned with gold keys.
