Before Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, embarked on her first tour of Australia she was reportedly given a strict fashion edict by Queen Elizabeth to drop her hemlines and wear block colours.

However, it appears she took her style cues from comedians instead.

While fashion lovers and Kate fans were adding a $440 white LK Bennett cotton dress to their virtual carts recently, actress Mindy Kaling was taking to social media to brag about being ahead of the "replikate" curve.

Before Catherine debuted the dress covered in blue poppies on day four of the royal tour, Kaling, known for her role as Kelly Kapoor in the US version of The Office as well as the star and creator of sitcom The Mindy Project, had already worn it while filming the last episode of her TV show.

"UHH, Miss Duchess Whoever, I WORE this dress last week! What's next? Kate in my donut print pyjamas I mean c'mon," she posted on Instagram with a photo of her and Catherine both wearing the dress.

The duchess even styled the look in a similar way to the Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? author with her hair half-up, half-down and with blue suede Alexander McQueen pumps and an Australian-designed clutch by Oroton.

As to be expected, the bold blue calf-skin purse called Odeion sold out instantly too.

It was the second time during the royal tour down under that Kate showed her commoner colours.

When two primary schoolgirls waved some new jewellery options at her - a fistful of loom bands - during a public walking engagement, the 32-year-old mother of one, backtracked, broke away from her security detail and made a beeline for them.

Apparently the bracelets, made from pieces of coloured plastic, are what all the stylish ladies in primary school are rocking in the canteen line these days.

After accepting the loom bands, Catherine reportedly piled them on her wrist, but that's where the similarities with pedestrian style ended.

As well as her designer dresses and heels, the duchess was also sporting some new bling on the 20-day tour of New Zealand and Australia. Spotted on the same finger as her heirloom engagement ring and wedding band was a new eternity ring she received after giving birth to Prince George and further north up her left arm was a new luxury timepiece by Cartier.

The $5000 stainless steel watch, from the Ballon Bleu collection, was a gift from William for her birthday earlier this year.
